In this issue: NACRA 2016 conference highlights and feedback December 2016 In this issue: NACRA 2016 conference highlights and feedback What Happened in Vegas Went Home with These Attendees by Janis Gogan A recent trend is gathering steam: Cohorts of business school faculty attend NACRA together, bringing new insights back home. A few years ago Paul Golding, Business Dean at the University of Technology- Jamaica, started this trend of attending NACRA along with several faculty members. Dean Golding wants to improve his institution’s capability to conduct high-quality case Research and produce useful regionally-anchored cases for discussion in Business programs throughout the Caribbean. In 2016 nine U Tech-Jamaica authors were represented in four cases that were presented in three tracks (Accounting, Finance and Economics; Digital Technologies & Processes, Marketing &International Business). This year U of South Florida DBA Program Director Matt Mullarkey brought seven USF DBA students (two others who wanted to attend were grounded by a hurricane). Students in this Executive DBA program– who have 12 or more years of managerial experience and hold an MBA or equivalent degree -- are required to research and prepare a publishable teaching case before July of their first year in the program. With Matt, NACRA Past President Janis Gogan co-taught the Case Research course, delivered one weekend each in April, May and June 2016. Janis and Matt encouraged students to write cases on an accelerated basis in order to meet the June NACRA conference submission deadline. Nine of the 34 students in this cohort rose to the challenge. With some working in pairs and others alone, six of their cases were presented in four different NACRA roundtable tracks (Digital Technologies & Processes, Governance/Ethics, Marketing & International Business, OB/HRM, and Strategy). Clinton Daniel wrote about a CIO deciding whether to select Amazon, Google, or Microsoft as a cloud services provider. That case placed second in the Student Case competition – congratulations, Clinton! Matt Mullarkey and the USF DBA students had high praise for the NACRA conference and colleagues they met in five track roundtables. The USF case research course, which Matt and Janis Gogan will co-teach again in spring 2017, will be redesigned: students will have several NACRA like roundtable experiences as they progress from learning how to discuss teaching cases, to creating a two-page case proposal, conducting the research, and preparing their own case and accompanying teaching note.   Paul Golding Matt Mullarkey Pictured (L-to-R) Marlene Reed, Clinton Daniel and Janis Gogan
