I can analyze the structure and meaning of poetry. The Highwayman Page 247 yellow book I can analyze the structure and meaning of poetry. Divide a piece of paper into 6 sections.

Read the first stanza. 1. How would you describe the tone in stanza 1? What words help you draw that conclusion?

Finish part 1. 2. What can you infer when the highwayman tells Bess on line 27, “Yet, if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day, then look for me by moonlight”?

Read through page 251. 3. On page 251, lines 77-79 says, “Her musket shattered in the moonlight, Shattered her breast in the moonlight and warned him – with her death.” Who is Bess warning and why?

Finish the poem. 4. In your opinion, who showed the most courage – the Highwayman or Bess? Support your answer.

5. Go back to the 1st and 2nd stanzas on page 248 5. Go back to the 1st and 2nd stanzas on page 248. It is implied in the poem that Tim told the redcoats of the highwayman’s love for Bess. What is Tim’s motive, or reason, for betraying Bess?
