Why d.h.s. for Driver’s Education? ⇢ Classroom Driver’s Education is a graduation requirement for ALL students. ⇢ Students participate in our “Impairment Driving Simulator.” ⇢ Students receive MORE personalized attention then a private driving school. ⇢ 95% of students complete their BTW portion during the school day. ⇢ DHS has one of the LOWEST driver’s education fees in the area. ⇢ Driver’s Ed. Is the ONLY subject that receives state reimbursements. ⇢ BTW students drive brand NEW vehicles, each quarter of the school year. PHASE 1: PHASE 2: Classroom (Mental/Emotional) ▫ 15 years old (14 upon request) ▫ 9 Weeks Long ▫ 30 Hours of Instruction ▫ Rules of the Road ▫ Illinois State Written Test ▫ Vision Exam ▫ Instructional Driver’s Permit ($20) PHASE 2: B-T-W (Physical) ▫ 8-9 Weeks Long ▫ 6 Hours of Personalized Instruction ▫ 6 Hours of Peer Observation ▫ 50 State Required Practice Hours (12 Hours Above DO NOT count.) ▫ Illinois State Road Test ▫ Driver’s License

State of Illinois Requirements 5. Classroom State of Illinois Requirements ▫ ATTENDANCE: “Students enrolled in an approved Classroom Driver’s Education course are required to complete AND pass thirty (30) clock hours of instruction. If a student misses more than six (6) classes, excused or unexcused, he/she will be removed from the class.” ▫ PASS / FAIL: 1. “For a student to be eligible to take the Illinois State Law Written Exam, he/she must have a passing overall grade (“D” or higher). If, at the time the test is given, any student who is not passing the class, will receive an “F” and removed from the class, and placed into the next available quarter.” 2. “For a student to be eligible to take the Illinois State Cooperative Driving Test, he/she must earn either an overall grade of “A” or “B” on the Written Exam. Any student who finishes with a grade of “C,” will still be eligible to take B-T-W, but he/she will be required to take the ISCDT at the DMV.

Common questions ** HOW SOON SHOULD WE START? ⇢ A.S.A.P! ⇢ You know your child best! ⇢ Make them become “active passengers!” ** WHERE SHOULD WE START PRACTICING? ⇢ Parking Lots ⇢ Rural or Country Roads ⇢ Neighborhoods & Subdivisions ⇢ Cemeteries ** WHEN SHOULD THEY BE PRACTICING? … as much as possible – they can NEVER have too much experience! ⇢ Drive in ALL weather conditions! ⇢ Drive at ALL times of day! (10 hours minimum night time driving)

6. Behind-the-wheel Required $50 Participation Fee HOW SOON? Students most commonly complete B-T-W the quarter following Classroom. WHAT HOUR? Students are pulled from the following classes to take B-T-W: 1. Study Hall 2. PE 3. Band / Chorus WHEN? Students are selected for B-T-W based on (1) their birthday & (2) their class schedule. HOW OFTEN? Students will drive 2 days a week until they reach their 12 hours. (6 driving & 6 observing) ** It is HIGHLY recommend that students get at least 5 or more hours of practice before beginning B-T-W.

An explanation of how grades are administered is described below: B-T-W Daily grades ⇢ Each day a student drives, he/she will have a specific "DRIVE GOAL” in which they attempt to practice. Following each drive, students will receive a letter grade based on their performance related to that skill. An explanation of how grades are administered is described below: "A” = Student-driver completed that day's drive goal with no issues. "B” =      Student-driver needs further "coaching" to help improve his/her skills related to that day's drive goal. "C" =      Student-driver needs further "practice" learning how to perform and execute that day's drive goal more successfully. "F" =      Student-driver was not ready, and was unable to perform or complete that day's drive goal. to an acceptable standard. ** (Instructor will repeat that day's lesson.) **

3 Outcomes of B-T-W 1. Student-driver PASSES B-T-W (“A” or “B”) and takes the Illinois State Cooperative Driving Test with their instructor. 70% of students fall under this outcome. 2. Student-driver PASSES B-T-W (“C”) but DOES NOT take the Illinois State Cooperative Driving Test with his/her instructor. Test will be taken at the DMV. 25% of students fall under this outcome. 3. Student-driver FAILS B-T-W, and will RETAKE it with a new DHS instructor in a later quarter. 5% of students fall under this outcome – 2 FAIL POLICY

7. Steps after Driver’s ed. B-T-W Completion Letter ▫ 16 years old ▫ Held permit for 9 months DMV Documentation ▫ Driver’s Permit ▫ Birth Certificate (Courthouse) ▫ Social Security Card ▫ State Road Test (if taken @ DHS) ▫ 50 Hours Practice Sheet ▫ “Proof of Residency” in Illinois Permit Status Inquiry 2 weeks prior to going to the DMV, please check the following website to see if you student- driver has been APPROVED. “Real ID” Cards Starting in October of 2020, all US citizens will be required to have a "personalized identification card." These ID cards can be obtained from the DMV. $10 for anyone under 18 $20 for anyone 18 years or older

KEYS TO SUCCESS: 8. Parent Involvement * FACT #1: You are the KEY to their driving SUCCESS. * FACT #2: Students model what YOU do as a driver. * FACT #3: The time we get with them is NOT ENOUGH. KEYS TO SUCCESS: ⇢ Emphasize the skills being taught by his/her instructor. ⇢ Establish an agreement for what is “right” vs. “wrong” ⇢ Talk about different situations they encounter on the roads. ⇢ Reinforce the student-driver triangle. ⇢ Be a good example!!

Stay calm. Be positive. IN the end… Remember that your son/daughter is… LEARNING! DO NOT expect them to be perfect! Stay calm. Be positive. Listen to them. Try to see things from their P.O.V. Don’t show them OR tell them that YOU’RE nervous. Your nerves will make them nervous! Don’t take them not being able to do something, as them not listening or understanding. They might just simply “not be ready.”
