Course Overview Writing intensive Recognizing author’s style, purpose and choice in our reading, and then emulating it Understanding the real-world importance of grammar and written communication Building a rich vocabulary in order to help express complex ideas effectively

What to look forward to… Literature: The Call of the Wild, I, Juan de Pareja, short stories, poetry Writing: narrative, informative, persuasive, memoir, writing folder, the Writer’s Notebook Speaking: developing oral confidence

Grading Writing – The Writer’s Notebook, and the Writing Folder (published, process pieces of writing) Homework– reading, revising or finishing written assignments, finishing classwork Tests / Quizzes – reading checks, unit tests, vocabulary, grammar Portfolio– a student-produced collection of learning, writing and growth as a student this year
