Problems…. In the letter by Samuel Johnson, the author responds to a woman who wanted Johnson to speak to the archbishop of Canterbury’s patronage in order to get her son into the university. The letter is to a woman who wanted the Archbishop of Canterbury’s patronage for her son and Johnson’s purpose is to deny her. A woman wanted Johnson to get the Archbishop to get her son into the university, but Johnson didn’t know them, so he denied her. By using tone shift, logos, and definition, the author illustrates that the purpose of the letter is to deny the woman’s process of getting her son into the university. If you read it, you will see that you have been too repetitive in your introductions.

Problems…. The denial letter by Samuel Johnson addresses one woman’s unreasonable request. This request, Samuel argues in his 1872 reply, is born out of the woman’s excessive hope. Her hope was to obtain the Archbishop’s patronage for her son to go to a university. However, the mother did not request that patronage from the right person, so Johnson had to deny her request. By using tone shift, logos, and definition, the author crafts his rejection of this mother’s plea for her son. Time to fix it!

An interesting ending... In conclusion, Johnson does an effective job of letting the woman down easy. Many rhetorical elements were utilized in the letter to do this, including repetition, tone shift, and logical appeal. In many situations, people expect a solid yes or no answer, and, as the author demonstrates, there is actually so much more to a denial than that. Johnson appeared to understand the woman’s position, and that it is also important to be aware that rejection of an individual is not necessarily the easiest job ever. So Johnson’s usage of rhetorical elements were crucial to not sounding hostile while allowing the woman to understand why he rejected her unrealistic request. This is Yorlenny’s conclusion with edits. What makes this conclusion interesting is that the summary of the rhetorical devices takes place in one sentence (the second one). The rest of the conclusion evaluates the job Johnson did, and discusses a universal truth--that denials are not easy.
