Democratic Citizenship Education CD 446 Fall 2016

Democratic Citizenship Education Focusing on collective process and cultural inequities To promote social justice and collective action 1800s –the mid 1900s Civil rights movement, feminist movement, disability movement, etc. Social constructivist theory, critical theory, Marxism, and anti-positivism, etc.

How is Democratic Citizenship Education connected to teaching and learning?

Hidden Curriculum “What one is taught can’t be separated from how one is taught” (EM, p.121) What is not taught The content not explicitly taught But there also implicit curriculum on how to behave, how relate to one another, and what to expect, etc.

What are some aspects of the hidden curriculum in your own secondary or postsecondary education?

Hidden curriculum may reflect on values that are promoted or discouraged in the society Schooling may actively participating in creating values and opportunities

DCE focused on Participation: Understanding one’s part in the social dynamics of learning, including the collective processes through which knowledge is produced Conscientization: the cultural dimensions of learning, focusing on the privileging and partialities that are knitted into established patterns of acting

Paulo Freire Quote Activity

What types of oppression have we witnessed or experienced? Can you think of hegemony behind oppression? Have you seen any collective movements to resist oppression in your education or in the society? http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/341/
