Luke 24, 13 - 35 On the Road to Emmaus Devotion Timisoara, October 2018 Luke 24, 13 - 35 On the Road to Emmaus

1. The risen Jesus is close to the broken-hearted Ps 34,19 “The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all.” “The Lord is close to those who are broken-hearted and close to those who have a broken soul”. (Germ.) Isaiah 42,2 ”He will not break a bent twig. He will not put out a dimly burning flame.” 2.Tim2;13 Even if we are not faithful, he will remain faithful. He must be true to himself.

2. The risen Jesus is an attentive listener “He walks with me and talks with me …“ and he listens to me! Education doesn‘t begin with teaching but with listening. Jesus is good teacher, because he asks questions and he listens.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF LISTENING By Sonya Hemsley from Excellence Centre Pacific Hills

Ps 94, 9 “He who planted the ear, does he not hear?” “The first service that one owes to others in the fellowship consists in listening to them. Just as love to God begins with listening to His Word, so the beginning of love for the brethren is learning to listen to them. It is God’s love for us that He not only gives us His Word but also lends us His ear. So it is His work that we do for our brother when we learn to listen to him. Christians, especially ministers, so often think they must always contribute something when they are in the company of others, that this is the one service they have to render. They forget that listening can be a greater service than speaking”. Ps 94, 9 “He who planted the ear, does he not hear?”

3. The risen Jesus’ words kindle a fire in us (a) Joh 5,39 “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life”. 1.Cor 1,18 “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God”. Jer 23,29 ”Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and l like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?”

3. The risen Jesus’ words kindle a fire in us (b) 3. The risen Jesus’ words kindle a fire in us (b) In the parable of the sower (Mark 4,19) Jesus mentions three tranquilizers: “And… the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things …enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful”

3. The risen Jesus’ words kindle a fire in us (c) Isaiah 40, 21ff „21 Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? … 28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

of the word of God that keeps our hearts burning”. “Let us spray for a renewed love of the word of God that keeps our hearts burning”.
