What is an Occupational Safety and Health Management System (OSHMS)?

Aim ?

The five step risk assessment method : Identify the hazards. STEP1 Decide who might be harmed and how. STEP2 Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions. STEP3 Record your findings and implement them. STEP4 Review your assessment and update if necessary. STEP5

Type of OSH-MS used National standard MS 1722:2011 Association standard: (recognised internationally) OHSAS 18001:2007

OSH-MS standard is based on Deming cycle (1950) (PDCA) OSH-MS standard is based on Deming cycle (1950) Plan Do Check Act Review of system for continue improvement of OSH performance Involves setting of OSH policy, allocation of resources, provision of skills & organisations, hazard identification and risk assessment Monitor and measure programme against the OSH policy , objectives, legal and other requirement Actual implementation and operation of OSH programme

Key Elements for OSH-MS: MS1722:2003 Management System Model

MS 1722:2011 OHSAS 18001:2007

Benefits of OSH-MS: ■ The possibility of integrating OSH requirements into business systems and aligning OSH objectives with business objectives, ■ Harmonizing OSH requirements with other related requirements, such as quality and environment; ■ Streamlining and improving communication mechanisms, policies, procedures, programmes, and objectives according to a set of rules applied universally;

Benefits of OSH-MS: ■ Establishing an environment conducive to the building of a preventative safety and health culture; ■ Strengthening social dialogue; ■ Distributing OSH responsibilities along the line management. ■ Adapting to the size and activity of the organization, and to the types of hazards encountered. ■ Establishing a continuous improvement framework; and, ■ Providing an auditable baseline for performance evaluation.

Voluntary Initiatives in Promoting OSH MS Mentor-mentee program NGOs e.g. MSOSH, CICM, MTUC, MEF creating awareness for OSH MS implementation Contractor Safety Passport System OSH in Schools
