Disability Awareness By Caryn Monroe

What is a disability? It’s a physical or mental condition that limits a person's movements, senses, or activities. What kinds are there? Physical (you can see) Mental (you can’t see)

Physical & Mental Disabilities Blind/Visual impairment Deaf/hearing impairment No use of 1 or more limbs Mental Autism Learning Disabilities Communication disorders

Behavior tips Use a normal tone of voice. Always ask before helping. Don’t be mean or talk down to someone. Always ask before helping. Don’t just assume someone needs help. A 10 second stare is okay. Looking is okay but not too long. See a movie or read a book with people with disabilities in it.

Be a great friend! Kids with disabilities are just kids. Each activity gave you an idea of what a person might go through with a certain disability. Keep that in mind the next time you are playing with someone who has a disability.
