THE CIRCUM-HELLAS VOLCANIC PROVINCE (CHVP) Leon Manfredi April 18, 2009

THE CIRCUM-HELLAS VOLCANIC PROVINCE (CHVP) Overview Covers > 4.86 million km2 Contains the six oldest central vent volcanoes on Mars (3.8 to 3.4 Ga) Modified by aeolian and periglacial processes

OBJECTIVE Determine the full extent of volcanic province Determine age of units

APPROACH Map the key units “crater counts” MOLA Shaded Relief THEMIS Day IR Image

UNITS ANALYZED

AGES OF KEY UNITS Based on alogrithm of Hartmann & Neukum (2001)

THE CIRCUM-HELLAS VOLCANIC PROVINCE (CHVP) Summary CHVP covers ≈ 4.86 x 106 km2 (Elysium Province ≈ 4.9 x 106 km2, Tharsis Province ≈ 2 x 107 km2) Represents the oldest “central” volcanism on Mars Includes substantial “ridged plains” volcanism Ages range from 3.4 Ga to 3.8 Ga

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Dr. Ronald Greeley Dr. David Williams JMARS Development Team Chris Edwards
