Using a Scientific Model to Predict Speed Key Question: Why are scientific models important?

What is a model? A representation of a real life structure, idea, or concept.

Types of Models 1.Mental models 2.Physical models – can be looked at, touched, and measured 3.Conceptual models – describes a system and how it works

4.Graphic models – shows the relationship between two variables on a graph so that the relationship is easily seen and understood.

Speed vs. time graph A Speed vs. time graph shows both the relationship between the variables as well as how much one variable affects another.

Speed vs. time graph

Graph that shows a steady relationship between variables will help us identify relationships that exist in nature and can also be used to predict unknown values.

Why are scientific models important? They provide a way to visualize and sometimes manipulate a concept or idea.
