Applications from Galatians Liberty in Christ Applications from Galatians

Free to bear and share one another’s burdens Galatians 6:1-10

Free to bear and share one another’s burdens Gal. 6: 1-10 Paul shows that Liberty in Christ involves responsibilities. Toward Others Toward Ourselves

Free to bear and share one another’s burdens Gal. 6: 1-10 The Bible identifies three different kinds of burdens: Burdens of others that we should help bear. Burdens we must bear alone. Burdens that we are to cast on the Lord.

We are to bear one another’s burdens Galatians 6: 1-2 (NASB) Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.

We are to bear one another’s burdens Am I my brother’s keeper? Romans 14:10,12  (CEV) 10 Why do you criticize other followers of the Lord? Why do you look down on them? The day is coming when God will judge all of us. 12 And so, each of us must give an account to God for what we do. 1 Timothy 5:8 (NASB)  But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

We are to bear one another’s burdens Am I my brother’s keeper? 2 Thessalonians 3:10  (NASB)  For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either. You can’t grow spiritually for someone else! Ephesians 4:15-16  (NIV) Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

We are to bear one another’s burdens We are responsible to warn our brother. Ezek. 3:17-19 (CEV), “Ezekiel, son of man, I have appointed you to stand watch for the people of Israel. So listen to what I say, and then warn them for me. When I tell wicked people they will die because of their sins, you must warn them to turn from their sinful ways so they won’t be punished. If you refuse, you are responsible for their death.  However, if you do warn them, and they keep on sinning, they will die because of their sins, and you will be innocent.”

We are to bear one another’s burdens We are responsible to restore our brother. Galatians 6:1 (NIV)  Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. “caught”, “overtaken”, “surprised” How are we to restore? Gently Gal. 5: 22-23 (CEV) God’s Spirit makes us loving, happy, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, 23 gentle, and self-controlled.

Total Communication

We are to bear one another’s burdens We are responsible for the physical needs of one who needs our help. The Good Samaritan. “Fullfill the law of Christ” Matt. 22:39 – “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The Separation of the Sheep and Goats.

We are to bear one another’s burdens Are we willing to bear one another’s burdens? 1 Peter 1:22  (NIV) Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. What are some ways to express brotherly love?

We are to bear our own burdens Romans 14:12  (NIV)  So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God. 2 Corinthians 5:10  (CEV) After all, Christ will judge each of us for the good or the bad that we do while living in these bodies.

We are to bear our own burdens 2 Corinthians 13:5  (NIV) Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test? 1 Corinthians 11:28 (NIV)  Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup.

There are burdens which we are to cast on the Lord. 1 Peter 5:7  (CEV) God cares for you, so turn all your worries over to him. Reinhold Neibuhr (1892-1971) wrote the following: God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Sharing and Doing Good (Gal. 6:6, 10) We are to share in financial support. 1 Corinthians 9:14  (NIV)  In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel. 1 Timothy 5:17-18 (NIV) The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18 For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,”[a]and “The worker deserves his wages.”

Sharing and Doing Good (Gal. 6:6, 10) We are to share in spiritual blessings. The Fact of Christ’s Resurrection 1 Corinthians 15:1-2 (NASB) Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.

Sharing and Doing Good (Gal. 6:6, 10) Do Good To All Men. 1 Timothy 6:17-18  (CEV) Warn the rich people of this world not to be proud or to trust in wealth that is easily lost. Tell them to have faith in God, who is rich and blesses us with everything we need to enjoy life. 18 Instruct them to do as many good deeds as they can and to help everyone. Remind the rich to be generous and share what they have. Luke 6:27-28  (CEV) This is what I say to all who will listen to me: Love your enemies, and be good to everyone who hates you. 28 Ask God to bless anyone who curses you, and pray for everyone who is cruel to you.

We Reap What We Sow (Gal. 6: 7-9) 2 Corinthians 5:10 (NIV) For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. 2 Corinthians 5:17  (CEV) Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new. Galatians 5:16-17  (CEV) If you are guided by the Spirit, you won’t obey your selfish desires. 17 The Spirit and your desires are enemies of each other. They are always fighting each other and keeping you from doing what you feel you should.

We Reap What We Sow (Gal. 6: 7-9) “You can’t sow your wild oats today and then pray for a crop failure tomorrow.” 1 Corinthians 15:58  (NIV) Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. James 5:7 (CEV)  My friends, be patient until the Lord returns. Think of farmers who wait patiently for the spring and summer rains to make their valuable crops grow.

Our character today may not be what it should be, But it can change.
