Ambitious new NMC standards and plans for the future Add name, title and date information if required Anne Trotter Assistant Director: Education and Standards 12 April 2019

Education programme: our objectives Raise the ambition for nursing and midwifery, for the benefit of people, families and communities Maximise the quality and safety of nursing and midwifery education and training Ensure that regulation is fit for purpose, and not a barrier to individual and service development

Structure of the new standards

Education and training standards These standards apply to all parts of the register and all routes to registration. They provide the means to assure us that the student can meet the relevant standards of proficiency by undertaking an approved programme

Essential considerations Need for effective partnerships between AEIs and practice learning partners Actively involve inter disciplinary colleagues Understand and introduce new roles What supervision and assessment model will work in your practice learning environments? Who will be your supervisors and assessors? How will they be prepared for their role?

Supporting information https://www.nmc.org.uk/supporting-information-on-standards-for-student-supervision-and-assessment

Our new standards for registered nurses

Essential considerations Decisions regarding level and depth of theory and practice learning to meet the outcomes: Innovation and ambition Skills and procedures across all fields of nursing practice Theory and practice learning approaches Practice learning opportunities across health and care Use of simulation

As well as the revised Code – specific standards for nursing associates Standards of proficiency Standards for pre-registration nursing associate programmes Published last week. Will take each of these in turn

Return to practice update

Consultation findings Wide support for the review and for change Barriers- finance, access, student support (94% orgs / 91% individuals agreed) Use different approaches for individual circumstances (85% orgs / 90% individuals agreed) Programmes: agreement on ‘mixed cohort’ (69% orgs / 76% individuals) more flexibility and ‘tailoring’ ToC: yes for revalidation & overseas but not for FtP Self declaration: ‘split’ and concerns for FtP

Our new RtP standards Provide a 3 month extension for those who can fulfil revalidation but fall short of practice hours Offer a registration test as an alternative to completion of an RtP programme Include new Standards for RtP programmes (approvals can commence from May 2019)

New RtP standards timeline: Reviewed between 2016-18 Approved by NMC Council 27 March 2019 Publication of new standards May 2019 Planned transitional period with communication and support Current RtP standards to be withdrawn from Sept 2020

SPQ and SCPHN We commissioned an independent evaluation of our current standards (Blake Stephenson) The evaluation completed in early 2019 Paper to Council Seminar in April Engagement with nurses, midwives, SCPHN and SPQs in early Summer

Public confidence in the care by nurses and midwives Vital considerations Preparation for significant change Partnerships between universities and practice placement providers Practice learning opportunities to meet proficiencies – what could be improved and different?
