Collaborative Writing A Meaningful Mother’s Day

Find a Talking Partner You will need to work in a pair. There will be three pairs in each group.

A Meaningful Mother’s Day

What is meaningful? Offering help to the needy. Making a lot of people happy instead of just you or your mother Making sacrifice Something you did and it was an example of changing from bad to good

Who can you help? The needy The underprivileged The poor The sick The old people in the Home for the Elderly The cancer patients The homeless The orphan in an orphanage The earthquake victims in Sichuan

Brainstorming Ideas: Talk ! HOW? WHY? WHO? A Meaningful Mother’s Day WHAT? WHEN? WHERE?

Re-arrange your ideas: Write Write down your ideas on a list. Which paragraph should the words go? They can go to all different paragraphs. (Put the number in the brackets.) Which is a noun? Which is a verb? Which is an adjective? Underline them with different colours

Adjective + Noun Do they match? 20 Adjectives 5 Nouns strict Food and drinks Mother Amazing Home for the Elderly committed Helper inexpensive Motivated Volunteer valuable

Form a pattern of two adjectives + noun An inconsiderate and selfish (mother) A dedicated and lovely (mother) to all A valuable and rare (present) An expensive but meaningless (present)

Starting to Write: The background Work with your talking partner. Write the first paragraph of your story -> the background You have 10 minutes.

Improve your writing How many different types/ forms of punctuation marks have you used in the first paragraph? Check the use of capital letters! How many different verbs of speech have you used? Add some of them in if you can. e.g. shouted/ murmured/ whispered/ giggled/ panted/ exclaimed/ yelled

Share With Us Read aloud the most dramatic sentence with the verb of speech.

Go on with your story: the climax Give your work to the next pair in your group. Now read the first paragraph and go on with the second paragraph of the new story. You have 10 minutes.

Improve your story How many different connectives have you used? Add some if you can. e.g. moreover, then, next, afterwards, however, as a result, for example

Share With Us Read aloud your favourite sentences showing the connective.

Finishing your story: Ending Swap your work and finish the story with reference to the title: A Meaningful Mother’s Day You have 10 minutes

Improve your story (A) Have you used any adjective patterns? It is necessary for us to be a committed volunteer. It is really meaningful to contribute our time and effort to help those in need.

Improve your Story (B) How many adjective clauses have you got in the whole story? Add some if you can. e.g. My mother, who was not so aware of the under-priviledged, is now a very committed volunteer in Hong Kong. E.g. I have donated all my pocket money, which I saved since I was very young, to help all those who are suffering in the earthquake in Sichuan.

Adjective clause We arrived at the restaurant. It was already fully packed with customers. We arrived at the restaurant which was already fully packed with customers. The Home for the Elderly was full of people. They thought they were neglected by their families. The Home for the Elderly was full of people who thought they were neglected by their families.

Read aloud Read aloud the longest sentence with the adjective clause.

Peer Evaluation On the last piece of the work, write your evaluation. Put two stars about the good points of the work. Very interesting/ imaginative/ touching/ creative/ scary/ full of suspense Good use of adjective A lot of dialogues Good use of verbs of speech Write 1 “I wish….” There were more dialogues There was more information about the volunteers There was more contrast about your mother

Start your work! Look at the draft and the evaluation from your partners. Write your own story of “A Meaningful Mother’s Day”
