Engage! Day 1

The Beat Goes On What to Do: Insert one end of the straw into a ball of clay Flatten the bottom of the clay. Rest your hand on a flat surface with the palm side up. Place the bottom of the clay on the thumb side of your wrist. Move the clay around until you observe the straw start to move. Record what you see on your whiteboard.

The Beat Goes On Discuss these questions with your group and be prepared to share. What are you measuring with this activity? Explain what system you think is responsible for what you observed? How would running in place affect what you observed? Why? After students have had time to discuss with their group. Conduct a group discussion using Sharing is Caring strategy.

The Circulatory System

What is the role of the circulatory system? It moves blood around the body to provide nourishment and fight disease. Transports nutrients, oxygen and hormones to the cells. Transports waste products such as carbon dioxide away from the cells.

What is the circulatory system? Go with the Flow! What is the circulatory system? It contains your heart, blood, and blood vessels. Blood is the fluid that carries gases, nutrients, and wastes through the body. The circulatory system is a closed-loop system.

Circulatory System Intro Video

Musical Partners What role does the heart play in helping the circulatory system perform its functions? Give students 1 min to answer on their own and then conduct musical partners for them to discuss.

The Heart of the Matter The heart is a fist-sized organ that pumps blood around your body. The right side of the heart pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs and carries carbon dioxide out. The left side of the heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to the body.

What is blood made of? More than half of your blood is made up of a liquid called plasma, which is a mixture of water, minerals, nutrients, sugars, proteins, and waste.

What is blood made of? Red blood cells bring oxygen to every cell in the body. Platelets clump together to form blood clots when injury occurs. White blood cells fight pathogens and keep you healthy.

How does circulation help regulate body temperature? Rising temperatures in the body cause blood vessels in the skin to widen, allowing heat to be transferred out of the body. What happens when your body temperature drops? Blood vessels get narrower to save heat when body temperature drops.

How does the circulatory system help maintain homeostasis? Think Pair Share How does the circulatory system help maintain homeostasis? Allow students to participate in a Think Pair Share

Engage! Day 2

Demonstration What is happening to the small balloon? How is the model like the respiratory system? How might a larger lung capacity affect a person’s ability to exercise? Model of a Lung

The Respiratory System

What are the functions of the Respiratory System? transports oxygen from outside the body to the cells and tissues inside the body transports carbon dioxide out of the body.

What makes up the Respiratory System? The respiratory system is a group of organs that enable you to breath in and out. The mouth and nose take in oxygen. It travels down the trachea. Enters the lungs Carbon dioxide leaves in the opposite direction. Students will record in handout.

Give one, Get one Why don’t plants have the same With your shoulder partner: Take 30 seconds to answer the following question. Then allow your partner to answer. Collaborate and be ready to share your answer with the class! Why don’t plants have the same respiratory system as humans? Allow students to think and discuss before moving on. Accept all answers remind them about what they have learned about cellular respiration.

Breathe In & Breathe Out Show the video clip to students

Think Pair Share Explain how the respiratory system plays a role in the function of the circulatory system. Allow students to participate in a Think Pair Share

Exit Slip How does the respiratory system help the body maintain homeostasis? What complications might there be if there were something wrong with your respiratory system?
