Progressive Era Reform Movements

Online textbook chapter 9. Reading.. Online textbook chapter 9. I also uploaded a comprehensive Progressive Era packet that you can use a study resource.

Period of rapid change in America. Period of rapid reform in America. Progressive Era Roughly 1890-1920. Period of rapid change in America. Period of rapid reform in America.

Social and Moral Reform This area of reform focused on the societal problems caused by rapid Industrialization. Community centers begin to be established Libraries YMCAs “Slum Brigades” were groups of people who went into immigrant communities and taught the virtues of hard work and temperance.

The Temperance Movement The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTC) was founded in Cleveland in 1874. They went into bars singing and praying, urging the bartenders not to serve alcohol. By 1911 they had 245,000 members.

Socialism There was a severe economic panic in 1893 and many people begin to look to socialism as a means to help societies’ problems. Eugene V. Debs began the American Socialist Party in 1901. Their platform focused on the uneven balance between big business and ordinary people under the capitalist economy.

Child Labor Reform The National Child Labor Committee was formed in 1904. They gathered evidence of working conditions for children throughout the country. They would put together “exhibits” with pictures and tales of child labor in an effort to spread awareness about their plight. In 1916 the Keating-Own Act prohibited the transportation of goods across state lines that were produced with child labor.

Election Reform Initiative- This is a bill organized by the people, not legislatures. Referendum- This is the vote by the people on whether to accept the initiative or not. Recall- Voters can force a public official into another election before their term is set to expire. By 1920, 20 states had adopted one or more of these.

Election Reform Continued 17th Amendment- Direct election of Senators by the people (this had been a part of the Populist Party platform) is passed in 1913.

Women’s Suffrage Movement This really picked up speed after the Seneca Falls convention in 1848. When freed slaves (men) received the right to vote (15th Amendment), women’s suffrage really takes off, led by Susan B. Anthony The National Women Suffrage Association (NWSA) formed in 1890.

End of Unit 1 Information. A comprehensive study guide for this unit will be up on the website this afternoon. It will provide the topics that will be covered. A more detailed, question oriented study guide will be provided tomorrow during our review session. Test is Friday. Multiple Choice and 1 constructed response. A list of possible constructed response questions will be included in the study guide. Test Day means 2 packets will be selected for handing in. Take these two days to “tidy up” any incomplete packets. This also helps as a review exercise.
