How to become a pediatrician Emily’s Career Path How to become a pediatrician

My Career Goals I want to become a pediatrician by 2035. To get there, I will need to: Graduate high school by June 2021 Apply for a university and obtain a bachelor degree Apply to medical school and hopefully get in Complete a medical degree Complete a pediatrics residency Obtain a licence Get board certified

My Career Goal Statement By the year of 2035. I want to become a pediatrician. My plan is to complete high school then head to medical school. This will take about 4 years of hard work and studying. Once I have completed this I will go into a specialized pediatric program so that I am able to specifically treat children which will take about 3 years to complete this degree. Once I’ve completed this I will go into residency. When I every have any doubts I can always count on my friends and family to support me along the way. If I am struggling in any classes I will ask my professors any questions I have.

What is a Pediatrician Pediatricians provide care for infants, children, teenagers, and young adults. Some pediatricians specialize in pediatric surgery or serious medical conditions that commonly affect younger patients. Treat children who have minor illnesses, acute and chronic health problems, growth and development concerns, minor injuries, infectious diseases, and administer vaccinations.

You could work for a private practice or you could work at a hospital $50k – $335k is the salary range A pediatrician will normally work about 50 hours per week But additional hours will be spent helping the community through education, schools and government, professional group activities or providing free medical care to the needy. Hours very but will be around 9-5 for a private practice and could be anywhere up to 12 hour shifts for a hospital location About my future career

My job has a 0.4% chance of becoming automated Pediatricians have to show empathy and have to work with children who need extra care compared to adults Pediatricians have to consider other factors that no robot or machine would be able to do Certain tasks machines or robots will never be able to do like a human. For example abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver)

My compatibility The skills this job requires are: Communication skills Compassion Detail oriented Dexterity Leadership skills Organizational skills Patience Physical stamina Problem-solving skills I am 88% compatible with this job.

A pediatrician would be great for me because… I already have these skills for this career: Compassion Detail oriented Communication skills Leadership skills Organizational skills Physical stamina Problem-solving skills

I am not quite ready for this career, but I will get there! This is how I will get those necessary skills: I will also improve my dexterity through practice throughout my life and at medical school I will practice being patient now so that by the time I’m older I can be well experienced These are skills for the job I still need to learn: Dexterity Patience

Job Outlook In BC, the job outlook is 3 of 3 stars. Here are 2 reasons why: Employment growth will lead to several new positions. A moderate number of positions will become available due to retirements.

Safety in the Workplace In this career, I need to: Keep my area clean from germs to keep me and patients safe Protect myself and others from violent children Control difficult parents and prevent them from causing physical harm to myself and others Safety in the Workplace

This is what appeals to me with this career… I like to learn about the body and how it works I love learning new things to help improve how we do things I like helping my community I love working with children of all ages

These are some things I find less appealing about this career… You have to give vaccinations which is something I don’t like to do myself and aren’t very interested in administering to others There are many requirements and tests that have to be taken to become a pediatrician It costs a lot to go to medical school It takes a long time to become a pediatrician which means that I will be in a lot of schooling

Potential obstacles to getting this career The possible obstacles: Not getting accepted into medical school after I have completed a bachelors degree Not passing all of the required exams to become a registered pediatrician My plan to overcome them: Work hard that year so that I can try again and apply the next year Study hard and make sure that I put my complete effort into all of the tests. If I don’t understand parts then I will ask for help so I have a better chance on these tests.

Potential obstacles to being successful within this career The possible obstacles: Being able to deal with the stress of being a doctor Having a lot of deadlines and due dates My plan to overcome them: Taking time to myself and taking breaks every once and awhile Make sure that I’m organized and stay on top of all of my tasks

The training/education required for my career is: A bachelor of science degree Graduation from an approved medical school and specific specialty training are required. Completion of the certifying examinations of the Royal college of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Licensing by the provincial or territorial licensing authority are required. Four to five years of specialty residency training are required.

Pediatricians are awesome!!! Fun Facts: The word pediatrician is from two Greek words meaning “healer of children” The largest hospital and research facility in pediatrics is Boston Children's Hospital. Toronto's pediatric hospital is the second largest. Most pediatricians care for their patients until they no longer need parental consent, however some will continue until a child reaches the age of 21.
