The objectives Course Objectives: Global Learning Objective: Develop the ability to outline and plan an engineering project with several phases and participants from distinct disciplines Conduct a team-based project Perfect communication and analysis of technical concepts and alternatives Global Learning Objective: Use a Global Perspective to achieve a design that will have Global Acceptance and minimal barriers to trade. The objectives The main objective of the course is to prepare students for the realization of a Capstone Project. Emphasis is placed on Successful Design, an idea that involves Local and Global acceptance. Students engage in a close to real life project design and management experience. Wilmer Arellano 2014

Course Evaluation Contact information and Grading Need to read lectures and watch the assigned videos before class. Quizzes scores are based on questions from the readings and assigned videos. Make-Ups. Read syllabus for eligibility. May happen immediately after class or on a designated day, based on instructor decision. In this slide you can find my contact information my preferred method of communication is by e-mail you can also find the evaluation details and a grading scale you are going to have two projects and presentations for 40% of the total grade you will have two exams for 20% of the total grade you will have A PROJECT DEMONSTRATION for 15 percent of the total grade the final demonstration is the start of your project both in hardware and software you will need to complete a proposal for your project this proposal is only 10% of the total grade but it is required to pass the course You class participation will be evaluated as well, even though this is an online course your engagement in the project activities is going to be evaluated Wilmer Arellano 2014

Team Formation Early in the semester students must organize in teams on their own. The requirements are: Teams must be multidiscipline Contain a minimum number of 3 students per team. The typical number of members is 4. Teams of 5 students require approval by the instructor. Each team selects a team leader and finds 3 potential topics of interest It is crucial that the students form in teams early in the semester There are only two requirements, the teams must be multidiscipline and must have at least three members By multidiscipline we understand having members of both, electrical and computer engineering The optimal number of members is 4 as it will protect against a team of 3 disappearing in case of losing a team member Each team selects a team leader and finds 3 potential topics of interest Wilmer Arellano 2014

Mentors and Topics Armed with the 3 topics the team finds a Mentor and negotiates the topic of the design. During the proposal preparation students must clarify the need including: The mentor (The Client) point of view The results from a survey (The Users) The brainstorming of the team (The Designers). once you have the 3 topics the team needs to find a Mentor and negotiates the topic of the design. This process is very important and has to be taking seriously in order to be successful. Your goal is to convince a potential mentor in a single session As a continuation the team has to clarify the need including the mentor (The Client) point of view, the results from a survey (The Users), and the brainstorming of the team (The Designers). The proposal The Proposal also includes: A Feasibility and Risk Analysis A survey of related projects and patents Theory Model Analysis of potential Ethical Dilemmas of the project Health, Safety Sustainability Standards and Globalization issues. The Proposal you need to write encompasses many different aspects of the project among them: Feasibility and Risk Analysis, Will the team succeed Globalization issues and Standards. Will the project succeed in other cultures A survey of related projects and patents The state of art Theory Model Analysis of potential Ethical Dilemmas on the project, Health, Safety, Sustainability, Wilmer Arellano 2014

Department regulations concerning incomplete grades: Must not be able to complete the course through documented circumstances beyond his/her control. Must be passing the course prior to that part of the course that is not completed. Must contact the instructor or the secretary immediately before or during the part missed, so the instructor will be aware of the circumstances causing the incomplete. Must make up the incomplete work through the instructor of the course and should not be allowed to sit through another entire course to make up the incomplete. Must make proper arrangements with the instructor to complete the course before the last two weeks of the second term. Global Positioning Students upload to youtube.com a presentation on their project where they introduce their team and provide demonstrations and explanations about the starting project. These videos are accessible to people in any country with no internet restrictions. Samples can be found in Google with keywords: “YouTube FIU senior design projects” Your team will need to upload in a video to YouTube a presentation on their project where they introduce their team and provide demonstrations and explanations about the starting project. Examination Policy: This is different from incomplete regulations Please read carefully as it explains the eligibility criteria for make-up evaluations including oral presentations Wilmer Arellano 2014

Presentation Rubrics problem background we understand you presenting the correct information for the presentation command of subject matter relates to the correct use of engineering language command of language relates to the use of the natural language you are also going to be evaluated by the quality of your slides by the equal participation of each team member and by appropiatness of dress this it will total 90% of the presentation the remaining 10% of the grade will be related to your global learning presentation The rubric for the first presentation is very similar to this one but there is no global learning evaluation in the first presentation Wilmer Arellano 2014

Topics and Mentor Forms Next we will talk about topics and mentors forms The topics form will be used by your team to present your ideas to a potential mentor the better you complete these forms the greater the chance to obtain the mentor of your choice The mentor form will be used by mentors to evaluate how well the team presented the ideas and how well the interview went Wilmer Arellano 2014

These slide shows the project summary form You will complete this form to present the three potential topics to the mentor It includes a summarized problem statement where you will briefly explain the main problem you are trying to solve The objectives and constraints sections will describe the main characteristics of your project The product description section is a natural language description of the operation of your product The end product description section will explain the product now using the engineering language The Senior one hardware project section is not to be completed at this time as it will be part of a second iteration on the form Wilmer Arellano 2014

These light shows the potential mentor interview evaluation checklist The top portion of the form is to be completed by the team while the bottom portion of the form is to be completed by the potential mentor Every potential mentor that you interview will need to complete a copy of the bottom part of this form once that you find a mentor that accepts your topic you stop the process Wilmer Arellano 2014

Teams prepare a Project Proposal a 3 step process with partial deliveries and revisions Two reports and presentations, Research 1 and Research 2, include different sections of the proposal A final proposal is prepared including the updated sections of Research 1 an Research 2 (after revisions by instructor). The remaining sections of the proposal are included. (A signed EEL 4921C proposal is required to pass the course) Students upload to youtube.com a presentation on their project where they introduce their team and provide demonstrations and explanations about the starting project.
