Do Now: Friday the 13th (HW Check) Objectives: 1. Define producer, consumer, decomposer, heterotroph, autotroph, food chain, and food web. 2. Construct and analyze a food web model of the organisms found in a marsh ecosystem. Task: What type of molecules are always made by producers, but rarely by consumers?  

Populations can be producers, consumers, or decomposers. Food Webs A diagram that represents feeding relationships between populations in an ecosystem. Any Surprises? Populations can be producers, consumers, or decomposers. Try to put all of the organisms in the food web shown into those 3 categories

It’s all about ENERGY! PRODUCERS get their energy from inorganic sources (like sunlight) AKA autotrophs CONSUMERS get their energy from ingesting other organisms. AKA heterotrophs DECOMPOSERS get their energy by breaking down the macromolecules of dead organisms

Energy flows through ecosystems The arrows show the direction in which energy flows through this ecosystem. What is the source of energy for the entire community shown? What do you think a “secondary consumer” is?

Food Web Activity We will begin – but not finish the food web activity today. DO NOT ANSWER #4-7 YET. Begin by categorizing the organisms as producers, consumers, and decomposers. Next, begin arranging the populations and illustrating the energy flow through the ecosystem (arrows FROM food TO consumer). Finally, answer analysis questions 1-3 AND 8-12. DON’T DO THE PYRAMID (#4) YET.
