Presentation transcript:

Birmingham City University in Partnership With You Working together to train our future primary school teachers. How can you be involved?

We are proud of BCU… High reputation locally and nationally High employment rates Effective relationships with our partnership schools where many of our trainees get jobs Ofsted: ‘Trainees in all phases are very well prepared to teach in a diverse society; the provider makes excellent use of the rich diversity in the region’ The Guardian league tables – published 29.05.18 place BCU top in the WM and 17th in the country (out of 95 institutions).

BCU has two primary initial teacher training courses:- Different routes – Mathematics & SEN Subject specialism opportunities Different age groups PGCE Primary with QTS BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS

This means that each year we have approximately 800 trainees requiring school based training opportunities. A large proportion of our trainees commute to BCU as they live in the local area. They want their first jobs to be in Birmingham – they are training to stay as teachers in Birmingham and will be looking for jobs in your schools.

120 days

School based training and experiences. During the courses trainees will work in two/three different schools. The school experiences are developmental and progressive. Postgraduates have three periods of school based training during the one year of their course. Undergraduates have a period of school based training in each of the three years of their course.

Benefits of working with our trainees ….. Chance to shape the teaching population of the future. Trainees will come with new ideas and will be looking to develop the learning opportunities of your children. Opportunities for group interventions. Ongoing support from a BCU tutor. Monetary payment to contribute to your school budget. Mentor training. Further/future staff development – NQT conferences, Masters programmes

What is standing in the way of head teachers having trainees for their school based training in their settings? Ofsted Progress of children SAT’s / Phonics testing Staff time

Advantages of having BCU trainees in your setting from a school perspective

Do you think you can help? Alison Pemberton Smith Alison.Pemberton@bcu.ac.uk Paul Purser Paul.purser@bcu.ac.uk

Thank you for your time.
