Interpersonal communication techniques! By Jack Hughes

Modulating your voice When speaking in a presentation , to an audience you need to modulate your voice. The crowd want to hear a voice that sounds enthusiastic about what they are speaking about. The audience want the speaker to be happy and sound happy so that the presentation is not boring.

Articulating and expressing ideas clearly and concisely You have to pronounce what you are saying clearly and distinctly so that everyone in the audience understands you. You have to be concise when expressing your ideas so that you can cover everything in as much as a few words.

Listening actively! If people are listening actively they would take notes about what the speaker is saying so that they will remember everything. The audience could even ask questions to show that they were listening actively.

Clarifying and confirming understanding You could use paraphrasing to do this because you will explain your ideas in a different way to what you have before hand so that people definitely understand what you are trying to tell them. You could even use repetition in case people did not hear you properly as they would hear you a second time around. You could ask questions about what you have just spoke about to confirm understanding.

Responding to questions You must respond to questions with accurate information. You can not lie just to answer a question as it is wrong to give false information. If you can not answer a question, just find out the answer and tell them at the time or after the presentation has finished.

Ensuring content is appropriate to the target audience Depending on the audience you would change the way you speak and deliver the presentation. If it was for adults it would be very formal and in depth as well as very professional. If it was a presentation getting delivered to children it would be a bit informal and the way you would deliver it would be a lot different to if you were delivering it to a load of adults , to children the explanations of things would have to be very basic and easy to understand as well as you have to keep them entertained so that they don’t get distracted and start messing around.

Identifying and reducing listening barriers If there was a listening barrier consisting of a noise you cant really block out , you would have to speak louder or use a microphone. When you identify a listening barrier you have to find the best way to reduce it. A few methods are, shutting doors , closing windows, stopping conversation within the audience and getting them to just listen etc.

Maintaining focus on the purpose of the communication Always maintain focus when communicating with an audience because if you go off track and sound boring they would get bored and stop listening and it would create problems. Make sure you are always focusing on the audience so that they know you are still engaged in the presentation etc.

Appropriate communication styles When speaking to an audience you have to use the appropriate communication style to suit them. Because there are different types of audiences, you need to use a different communication style for example when speaking to children and when speaking to adults you have to change the way you present yourself. Have to be serious when speaking to adults or proffessionals but when speaking to children you can make a laugh and joke etc.

Adapt terminology and vocabulary to the needs of the audience When speaking to adults you can use your normal vocabulary as they understand the same vocabulary as you. When speaking to children you have to use simple and basic words so that they understand what you are saying.

Differentiate between facts and feelings Even though there are a lot of facts about things they still could be under consideration to if they are true or not. So you have to be careful when stating facts.
