I/E Forum History & Purpose Dialog between Industry and Educators – Industry presents issues and concepts important to aviation employers at AABI Annual Meeting (Jul) – Educators respond with suggested academic & lab curriculum changes, and implications to AABI Criteria at Winter meeting (Feb) – Educator Responder Panel composed of educators with topical expertise Forum history includes both hard and soft topics Glass flight DecksCommunications skillsWriting skills Aviation business realityAviation maintenanceAviation medicine Aviation safetyMPL around the worldICAO history Airport managementPilot supply challengesVoluntary safety programs

2013 I/E Forum Panel 1 Preparing Flight Education Graduates for NextGen ADS-B, PBN/RNP & FDM Flight Education graduates will enter employment in a NextGen/FDM environment Current flight education aircraft not equipped for NextGen/FDM General aviation avionics have latent capability for NextGen/FDM I/E Forum possible outcomes: – Minimal outcome: increase awareness among educators of NextGen/FDM academic competency – Median outcome: dominant avionics supplier provides eventual capability for RF path in navigators & FDM innovation continues – Best outcome: dominant avionics supplier proactively engages university flight education community to develop strategy toward affordable NextGen/FDM implementation Educators form an active NextGen/FDM working group, define airline and business operations education objectives Avionics supplier convenes a working session of educators, OEMs, airline, and business operators to match airplane capability to education objectives Flight education students arrive at first employment fully competent to operate in a robust NextGen/FDM company environment

2013 I/E Forum Panel 2 AABI Faculty Development Program Report on beta test of Faculty Development Program Inform industry and educator community on next steps for providing Faculty Development Program experiences

2013 I/E Forum Panel 3 Explore future of New Hire Technician Training and FAA Part 147 Evolution The minimum training curriculum in Part 147 was created in 1970 and revised once in Significant changes to aircraft, electronics, and avionics technology have, and are, occurring at an accelerating pace. – What technologies and associated skills need to included in upcoming rule change? – The A&P has long been considered a generalist. Does this paradigm hold for the future or is some degree of added specialization required? – What is the long term role of the A&P versus a repairman? Leadership and supervision of non-certificated maintenance personnel? – What about avionics technicians, especially considering emergent NextGen capabilities and retrofit requirements ? Part 147 AMT training based on performance metrics, not time or credit, will be proposed for rule change. – What education standards are appropriate to serve industry needs? – What are the strengths and threats to this approach? – What role can AABI accreditation perform?
