ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE AND VALUES IN NURSING Name of Student Institution Date

Introduction Organization culture- a set of well held beliefs, behaviors, and characteristics that are shared by the members of the same organization. Every organization has its own culture which is different from the others. Organizational values-behaviors, principles or concepts that are regarded with utmost importance in a given organization Example of values integrity, quality, honesty, etc. Organization culture can be described as a set of well held beliefs, behaviors, and characteristics that are shared by the members of the same organization. Normally, every organization has its own culture which is different from the others. Organizational values refer to those behaviors, principles or concepts that are regarded with utmost importance in a given organization (Schein, 2009). For instance, an organization may have values such as integrity, quality, honesty, etc.

Values of Nurses and Organizational Values Nurses guided with values/culture of the organization Organizational values reflect its mission The nurses will adhere to these values/culture To deliver quality services to their clients The nursing professionals are guided with the culture and values of the organization they work for. The culture and values of a given organization reflect the mission of the organization with regard to how it serves its patients. The nurses will adhere to these values and culture to ensure that they deliver quality services to patients.

Cont’d Ensuring that they have good long term relationships with patients Organizational values and culture will guide the nurses Nurses listen to the needs and wants of their clients or patients Respond accordingly in meeting those needs. Nurses uses organizational values in ensuring that they have good long term relationships. Further, the organizational values and culture will guide the nurses in ensuring that they listen to the needs and wants of their clients or patients and respond according in meeting those needs.

Alignment of Nurse’s Values and Organizational Values Need to have alignment between the values of the organization and the values of the nurse Organizational values should reflect the values the nurses as human beings have. Nurses will be committed to achieving organizational goals and objectives Nurses will be comfortable to implement the values of the organization which are in line with their own values. Patients will be served with high quality services There is need to have alignment between the values of the organization and the values of the nurse. In other words, the values that the organization has should also reflect the values the nurses as human beings have. This will help in ensuring that the nurses are committed to executing the goals and objectives of the organization. That is, the nurses will be comfortable to implement the values of the organization which are in line with their own values. As a result, the patients will be served with high quality services and their complaints and concerns will be addressing accordingly.

Cont’d Nurses are human beings-have their own values. The values have to align well with organizational values A conflict between the values of the nurses and the values of a given organization will compromise the quality of the services offered to the patients. Nurses will lose morale and will not be committed to organizational the goals/objectives Nurses are human beings and as such they have their own values. These values have to align well with the values of a given organization. In case there is a conflict between the values of the nurses and the values of a given organization, this will compromise the quality of the services offered to the patients. Further, the nurses will lose morale and will not be committed to ensuring that the goals and the objectives of the given organization are achieved (Beck, 2011).

Effective Communication and Decision Making Effective Communication- must use clear language that is void of ambiguity. Words or terms have to be clear and simple to understand. It has to be real-time and quick. Should have current data to help the recipients to make good decisions For communication to be effective, the individuals engaged in it must use clear language that is void of ambiguity. That is, the words or terms have to be clear and simple to understand. Further, effective communication has to be real-time and quick. That is, the communication should have the current data which will help the recipients to make good decisions (Gutierrez, Candela, & Carver, 2012).

Overcoming Workplace Challenges and Collaboration across Groups To overcome workplace challenges-effective communication techniques to give the clear instructions. Collaboration across groups- encouraged by allowing for feedback among the parties involved in the communication. Communication has to be a two-way thing In order to overcome workplace challenges an individual has to use effective communication techniques to give the clear instructions. Collaboration across groups can be encouraged by allowing for feedback among the parties involved in the communication. That is communication has to be a two-way thing where the parties have to listen to exchange information to and fro.

Effective Problem-Solving Effective communication- to promote effective problem solving in that the people involved in communication have good relation in that they provide feedback to each other with regard to the topic being discussed Effective communication encourages joint effort Team members contribute their individual ideas which will collectively lead to a better solution to a given problem Effective communication can promote effective problem solving in that the people involved in communication have good relation in that they provide feedback to each other with regard to the topic being discussed. Further, effective communication encourages joint effort to be combined in solving a certain problem. For instance, during group work, the team members contribute their individual ideas which will collectively lead to a better solution to a given problem (Purdy, 2013).

Cont’d Effective communication-used to ensure that the relevant parties are consulted whenever the decision has to be made. Participatory management-management empowers the workers to set their own targets and the deadlines for achieving those targets Effective communication also can be used to ensure that the relevant parties are consulted whenever the decision has to be made. This is the concept of participatory management when the management empowers the workers to set their own targets and the deadlines for achieving those targets.

Mutual Relationship Between Management and Workers Effective communication techniques- ensure that an individual liaises with the management To get the necessary support required to execute his or her day to day duties Workers require material as well as emotional support from the management Effective communication techniques-ensure there is a mutual relationship between the workers and the management Effective communication techniques will ensure that an individual liaises with the management to get the necessary support required to execute his or her day to day duties. Workers require material as well as emotional support from the management. It is the effective communication techniques that will ensure that there is a mutual relationship between the workers and the management. This will eliminate the cases of injustices at workplace such as favorism (Purdy, 2013).

Proper Reporting of Duties Effective communication techniques-ensure there is proper reporting of the duties and activities This will improve accountability An individual will be personally responsible for his/her duties allocated to him/her No cases of blame games Individual employees will be committed to ensuring that they deliver quality work Effective communication techniques will also ensure that there is proper reporting of the duties and activities of the organization and this will improve accountability. As such, an individual will be personally responsible for the duties allocated to him or her and therefore there will be no cases of blame games. Sometimes the senior employees have the tendency to blame the junior employees for the mistakes that they are personally responsible. When there is proper reporting of the duties of every individual employee, this will enhance accountability and the individual employees will be committed to ensuring that they deliver quality work (Gutierrez, Candela, & Carver, 2012).

Alignment of My Values and Organizational Values A time when my values did align with the values of the organization. One of the values of my organization-honesty. Honesty is my value Diagnosed a patient requiring serious medial attention In my nursing professional, there is a time when my values did align with the values of the organization. One of the values of the organization that I work in is honesty. I am also an honest person who is sincere with what I say. During this time, I diagnosed a patient and found that his condition was serious and needed immediate medical attention at the Intensive Care Unit.

Cont’d Communicate the message to the patient The patient to prepare his psychologically that he is going to an ICU. This made The patient controlled his emotion Medial team had a good opportunity to treat him Honesty helps create good relations with patients As such, I communicate this message to the patient so that he could prepare his psychology that he is going to an ICU. This made the patient to control his emotion and gave the medial team a good opportunity to treat him. Normally, when a condition of patient is critical, some nurses would choose not to break the news to him or her. However, our organization holds honesty with utmost importance so that we can have good relations with our patients.

Honesty and Loyalty Honesty to the clients or customers-enhances trust and loyalty When the patients realize that the healthcare organization treats them with honesty, they Patients will tend to trust the services of that organization Will remain loyal to that organization Will refer their friends to this organization Being honesty to the clients or customers will enhance trust and loyalty. When the patients realize that the healthcare organization treats them with honesty, they will tend to trust the services of that organization. Eventually, these patients will remain loyal to that organization in that they continue to seek their services rather than the services of the competitors. There is also the possibility that these patients will refer their friends to this organization and as such the organization will attain good reputation.

Conclusions Organizational values to reflect the values the nurses Nurses to be committed to organizational goals and objectives Effective communication promotes effective problem solving, collaborations among groups, overcoming workplace challenges Honesty enhances loyalty The values that the organization has should also reflect the values the nurses as human beings have. This will help in ensuring that the nurses are committed to executing the goals and objectives of the organization. For communication to be effective, the individuals engaged in it must use clear language that is void of ambiguity. Effective communication can promote effective problem solving in that the people involved in communication have good relation in that they provide feedback to each other with regard to the topic being discussed. In my nursing professional, there is a time when honesty as my value did align with the values of the organization.
