Pluscuamperfecto Daniel Ferguson

What is it? Pluscuamperfecto is roughly the “had” or “have” form of Spanish. It has two forms, the indicative and the subjunctive. Examples: I had spoken, You had hoped, We had doubted

How to form it To use pluscuamperfecto, you need A subject The correctly conjugated form of “haber” (more on this in the next slides) A past participle verb For example: Yo había hablado. (I have spoken)

How to conjugate “haber” in the indicative (yo) había -AR → -ado -ER / -IR → -ido (tú) habías (él, ella, usted) (nosotros, nosotras) habíamos (vosotros, vosotras) habíais (ellos, ellas, ustedes) habían Just a reminder- the indicative is a mood or feeling which reflects perfect certainty. When you use the indicative form, you mean to say that what you are saying has, without any doubt, actually happened. No había visto que estabas ahí. I had not seen you were there.

-AR → -ado -ER / -IR → -ido hubiéramos o hubiésemos How to conjugate “haber” in the subjunctive (in Latin America, only the “ra” form is used. However, it is good to be familiar with the “se” form) (yo) hubiera o hubiese -AR → -ado -ER / -IR → -ido (tú) hubieras o hubieses (él, ella, usted) (nosotros, nosotras) hubiéramos o hubiésemos (vosotros, vosotras) hubierais o hubieseis (ellos, ellas, ustedes) hubieran o hubiesen Just a reminder- the subjunctive is a mood or feeling which indicates uncertainty, or deals with hypothetical situations.  Si hubiéramos reservado una mesa, ahora no tendríamos que esperar. If we had reserved a seat, we would not need to wait.

Because the indicative is a little tricky in knowing when to use it, review this before practicing. The past pefect subjunctive is commonly used in three different ways: 1. Completed actions that had happened before another past action Pablo dudó que yo hubiera/hubiese ido a Perú. (Pablo doubted that I had been to Peru.) Mi madre no creyó que hubieras/hubieses limpiado el cuarto. (My mother did not believe that you had cleaned the room.) El juez no pensó que el testigo hubiera/hubiese mentido. (The judge didn´t think the witness had lied.) 2. Conditional constructions Si hubiera/hubiese sabido, habría venido. (If I had known, I would have come.) ¿Lo hubiera/hubiese comprado si tuviera el dinero? (Would you have bought it if you had had the money?) 3. Hypothetical situations that could have happened, but didn’t. Ojalá que hubiera/hubiese sabido. (I wish I had known.) Ojalá que hubiéramos/hubiésemos podido venir. (If only we had been able to come.)

Practica http://www.spanishdict.com/topics/practice/100 Here you can practice only the indicative form http://www.trinity.edu/mstroud/grammar/subj2b.htm This is an excellent website to practice 1) Indentifying wither to use the indicative or subjunctive form 2) How to form both
