Presentation transcript:

Critical Thinking You will have three minutes to complete today’s puzzle. No talking or Cheating. Make sure you can explain how and Why you Arrived at your answer on this one.

The Instructions In this teaser, you have to find the odd ones out in the groups of words. BUT WAIT! There's a catch. Each group of words has TWO words which do not belong. Can you find them both? EXAMPLE:  Lily - Jane - Tulip - Rose Jane does not belong as it's the only one which is not a flower. Tulip also does not belong because it's the only one which is not a girl's name.

The Puzzle You're on your own for the rest! 1. Dodge - Ford - Lincoln - Hoover 2. King - Earl - Knight - Bishop 3. Yellow - Green - Dead - Black

The Answers 1. Hoover does not belong as it's the only one which is not a car manufacturer. Dodge does not belong as it's the only one which is not the last name of a President of USA. 2. Bishop does not belong as it's the only one which is not a class of nobility. Earl does not belong as it's the only one which is not a Chess piece. 3. Dead does not belong as it's the only one which is not a color. Green does not belong as it's the only one which is not the name of a sea.

Goals for the Day I can demonstrate a surface level understanding of the text. I can identify the uses of metaphors as a rhetorical device and create metaphors for a specific effect.

Quick Vocabulary Quiz #18 1. Open to Socrative 2. Login to Bauer2016 3. Type your first name and last name 4. You have exactly five minutes to complete the quiz. Quick Vocabulary Quiz #18

Clauses Independent Dependent/Subordinate

Discuss Clauses for Processing Partner for processing. Be sure both partners understand the definition of participles and what function they can serve. THEN, practice with your partner. Follow the steps for partnering for practice. Be sure both partners feel confident with participles. Remember, if you have questions: 1. Ask your partner. 2. Refer back to the book or worksheets (look it up). 3. Ask me.

Annotation Assignment Requirements: The typed or handwritten response MUST be turned in the day of the quiz. If not turned in on that day, immediately after the quiz, you will receive half credit. Read and annotate the passage. Type or handwrite the summary: Write and define any words you do not know. There are always complex words in the passage. Don’t skip this. Write a 4-sentence rhetorical precis. Use your rhetorical precis rubric as a guide to ensure you include each component of the precis. The goal is to capture the SOAPSTone or rhetorical situation of the passage and ensure a quality understanding. After the precis, write down what you feel are the three most prominent strategies the author uses to develop his/her argument. Then, choose one of the three strategies to write a rhetorical analysis-like paragraph. Remember to cite evidence of where the strategy occurs and explain how it is used to help develop the author’s main argument. These can be any strategies that the author uses – you are not limited.

Meet with the groups from yesterday Take your stuff with you – get out your compare and contrast essays that you each wrote for homework – 2 minutes. Take 3 minutes to share your essays with your peers. Make sure each member has a copy or can at least see your copy. You will have 30 minutes total time to review each other’s essays (group of 3 – 10 minutes per person OR group of 4 – about 8 minutes per person). Review one group member’s work at a time like we did last time. Give each group member your full attention and effort. On the next slide, I have provided some guiding questions to help you give constructive feedback to each other. Use these questions to help improve the essays.

Questions to guide revision Is the claim the writer is trying to make clear? Is it explicit or implied? Is it effective? How could it be improved if it’s not particularly effective? Review the qualities of the three professional essays that used compare and contrast as a mode. Does the writer utilize these qualities in their essay? If not, what needs to be added or removed? Is compare and contrast the primary mode in the essay? Does the mode of compare and contrast effectively and fully support the claim being made? How could it be improved to make it more impactful? Do the items being compared and contrasted need more detail? If so, what should the writer add? Could it be written more concisely? If so, what should the writer remove? Where does the author’s main claim occur? Would it be more effective if moved to the beginning or end of the essay? Would it be more impactful if it was implied or explicit? Are there any grammatical, punctuational, or structural errors that distract the reader? If so, what are they? Help the writer understand the error and how it can ALWAYS be avoided from now on. Does the writer avoid 2nd person point of view (you)?

Summary of Peer Discussions Rather than having you revise this essay and turn in a new version, I’d like you to do a quick write explaining to me what you would change about your essay and what you thought you did particularly well. Open Google Classroom and go to the assignment titled: Quick Write – a summary of what I did well and what I need to improve upon in my compare and contrast essay. You have 5 minutes to write 1-2 paragraphs expressing how you improve upon your narration essay and also what you felt you did well with and would not change. Submit at the end of the 5 minutes if you are finished, if not, finish it on your own and submit.

Don’t forget your Snow Day Homework due on Tuesday. Annotation Assignment: Benjamin Franklin’s text

Take our your annotated texts You’ll have 10 minutes to complete the AP Multiple Choice Style Quiz Make sure when you finish that you turn in your quiz and any hand- written portion of the annotated text and annotation assignment.
