Introduction Jean Piaget, born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, on August 9, A Swiss psychologist, the first to make an organized study of the procurement of understanding in children He was considered a main figure in 20 th - century developmental psychology. Died on September 17, 1980 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Early Life First Son Rebecca Piaget and Arthur, a professor at the University of Neuchatel, much of Piaget’s childhood was influenced by his father. At an early age Piaget started showing interest for knowledge, particularly the study of natural sciences. At eleven, he published his paper on rare albino (having extremely pale or light skin) sparrow.

Family History In 1923, he got married to one of his student coworkers, Valentine Châtenay. In 1925, his first daughter Jacqueline Piaget was born. In 1927, his second daughter Lucienne Piagt was born. In 1931, his only son Laurent Piaget was born. His children became the center of attention for observation by Piaget.

Education and Career He was already a scholar at Neuchatel Latin high school by the age of 11 He studied natural sciences, after high school graduation, at the University of Neuchatel and obtained his Ph.D. Published two philosophical essays during his Ph.D. After spending a semester at university of Zurich he developed a curiosity for psychoanalysis, and left for France.

For the measurement of intelligence, he worked at the Ecole de la rue de la Grange-aux-Belles a boys' institute for one year. There he did his first experimental studies of the developing mind. He became director of studies in 1921 at the J.-J Rousseau Institute in Geneva. He wrote hundreds of articles and over sixty books ( Conti. ) Education and Career

Cognitive Development - Piaget Almost everything we do includes thinking or cognitive functioning like Remembering a phone number Recalling a list Following instructions How children develop abilities to do all these things? Why are some children better at some task? Why do some children develop quicker then the others?

Nature and Nurture Piaget supposed that nature and nurture act together to show the cognitive development Adaptation: The ability of reacting to the commands of the environment to realize one’s goals. Organization: The ability to integrate specific observations into clear knowledge

The new information can either be assimilated into present schemas or accommodated through studying present schema or generating a totally new kind of information. Assimilation denotes a part of the adaptation process originally proposed by Jean Piaget. With the help of assimilation, we take in new experiences and information, and integrate them into our existing thoughts. Assimilation and Accommodation

Accommodation involves varying one's existing schemas, or thoughts, as a result of new information or new experiences.. Assimilation and Accommodation (Conti.)

Piaget stages of cognitive development

1st stage of development continues from birth to 2 years. During this primary phase, children use abilities and skills they are born with like looking, listening, grasping, and sucking, to learn more about their surroundings. In short, they learn about the world and gain knowledge by the help of their sensory and motor responses. Sensorimotor Stage

2nd stage of development. Starts around age 2 and continues until age 7. During this stage, children starts engaging in symbolic play and start understanding symbols. However, they do not yet realize actual logic, cannot manipulate any information, and are unable to understand the view point of people, which Piaget termed as egocentrism. Preoperational stage

3rd stage of development. Begins around age 7 and last until age 11—and is considered involving the development of logical thought. Thinking tends to be concrete, children become more logical in their thinking. This stage also serves as a significant evolution between primary phases of development and the coming phases where kids will learn how to think more academically and hypothetically. Concrete operational stage

4th and final stage of cognitive development. Starts at about age 12 and continues until adulthood. At this stage, thinking becomes more advanced and sophisticated. Kids think about theoretical and abstract concepts and come up with visionary solutions to the problems. Skills such as deductive reasoning, logical thought and systematic planning also arise during this stage. Formal operational stage

The Piaget’s work is inspiring. He has immensely contributed to the world of education. But his constructivism approach is more too focused on theory of knowledge and not so much on theory action with all its emotional, mental, situational and physical properties. I think the method should evaluate the learning results also. Personal Opinion
