Managing digital libraries WORKSHOP on Managing digital libraries

Very different situations depending on… Mission of the library Specialized with defined users Public Kind of digital resources Based on owned printed books (even with copyright) Licenced as ebooks by publishers

Cases Fundacion Sancho El Sabio and University of Santa Croce Red de bibliotecas municipales de Bilbao and Public library of Trento

Specialized libraries Goals of the digital library : how do the users use the resources? Save the time of the users! To allow consultation of short parts and quotations Digital version of most required books owened by institution Access only INSIDE the library intranet recognized via IP (also in different site far away from each other and in the colleges where they live) or password (if the user gives its pw, it is its one responsability) Only streaming no download For the "community" of users no limits on nr of copies or time) This is allowed by the law (European directive)

Public libraries Ebooks bought with 20 loans (21 days, one user one copy, 2/5 a user ) checked via DRM Adobe (+ repository of their one digitazed resources) Access via password anywhere after 20 loans the ebooks disappears! And the library has to buy another copy with other loans no property of the ebooks No integration in OPAC The service is allowed by publishers contracted by an external entity (private or public)

In managing digital library… hard questions with publishers Digital version not allowed (European law againts them) Ebook not available for libraries (only for private clients) eBook with DRM eBook for libraries with all permission but more expensive (x 10)
