Managing & Resisting Imperialism How did imperialist countries manage their colonies? French West Africa British Nigeria

Indirect Control Direct Control Imperial Management Europeans developed two methods to manage colony Indirect Control Direct Control Local rulers/officials used Foreign rulers/officials used Some self rule to develop loyal future leaders No self-rule, people need to be loyal to “parent” country Based on European laws & local laws Used only European laws, “paternalism” Keep customs & traditions Assimilate the people into “parent” country’s culture Ex: Britain, US Ex: France, Germany, Portugal Positive effects of colonization: less local warfare, increased literacy, industrialization. Negative effects: lost culture, new diseases, famine

Resisting Imperialism Algeria: Algerians fought French rule for 50 years French had superior weapons, movement fails 2. Ethiopia: only successful movement against Italy Menelik II buys weapons from France & Russia Defeats Italians in 1896, keeps his country independent Liberia, founded by former Af-American slaves also remains independent (US protection)

The Boer Wars 1899: Boer War go to war with British. British burn down Boer farms kidnap women & children, form concentration camps 1909: British also fighting Zulu but defeat Boers & Zulu 1910: Boers & Zulus forced into new colony Union of South Africa
