LOCATION it lies 582 metres above the sea level in the Pardubice Region, about 30 km south off Chrudim on the northern edge of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands between two protected landscape areas – Žďárské Hills in the east and the Iron Mountains in the west the Chrudimka River runs through the town
POPULATION, DIVISION nearly10 thousand inhabitants historical part – Betlém urban conservation area with timbered houses of working class from the end of 19th – 30s of 20th century other parts - Olšinky, Blatno, Kouty, Dědová, etc.
HISTORY the first mentions of Hlinsko come from the year 1073 when king Vladislav was on the throne oldest parts were situated near the river, as the first settlers lived on the slopes of the river as far back as the 12th century the first written record dates back to 1349 the oldest building – the Fortress Hlinsko was declared a town in 1834
THE FORTRESS
THE TOWN EMBLEM, NAME by the 19th century, the area was a part of the Lords of Pardubice and Rychmburk estate, that is where the town coat of arms comes from a front half of a white horse in step with a blue bridle on the red background the name of the town is derived from the legend about the potters who settled down here as rich resources of high quality clay had been found in Hlinsko surroundings

BETLÉM the urban conservation area of folk architecture declared in 1995 to preserve the unique urban complex of timbered houses in the centre of the town used by petty craftsmen since the 18th century families of potters, weavers, joiners, toy-makers, saddlers, shoe-makers and butchers used to live there
BETLÉM in the past in the 1960’s, the local people were changing their lifestyles and they started moving into more modern housing one by one, the small homes in Betlém were left empty, they became decayed, and gradually began to disappear
BETLÉM today today most of the houses have been reconstructed tourists can take a guided tour while walking through Betlém, go to a restaurant, café,… some houses serve as shops (souvenirs, musical instruments,…) some houses are a place for exhibitions and educative programmes for schools and the public there’s tourist information centre

JEŽDÍK´S HOUSE
JEŽDÍK´S HOUSE a remarkable building in Hlinsko built in 1904 designed by Czech architect Ladislav Skřivánek the sgraffito that decorates the frontage presents parts of Czech and Hlinsko history
TOWN HALL seat of Municipal authorities built in 1598 re-built in Baroque style (1788-1792) transformed into its present state in 1850 seat of Municipal authorities ceremonial hall which is used for weddings, welcoming new-born citizens, passing on of graduation certificates and other significant events
Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary located on the site of the original Gothic church (possibly Romanesque), of which, the tower still remains rebuilt in Baroque style between 1730 – 1745 the pride of the church is it’s valuable baptistery from around 1628
Municipal Museum and Gallery traditional annual exhibition of paintings has been taking place here for over 50 years (presents works of outstanding Czech artists) other exhibitions
Multifunctional Centre was opened in 2011 the building consists of two halls – a theatre hall and a cinema hall with 3D technology the place is used for holding theatre performances, concerts, dancing competitions, balls and other cultural events used to be a prison (a police building), secondary apprentice school
