Widening of the War Ottoman Empire comes into the war on Germany’s side Russia, Great Britain, and France declare war on Ottoman Empire Italy switched sides after a promise by the Allies to gain part of Austrian lands (Triple Entente becomes Allied Powers or Allies) Imperialist power countries mobilize forces from all of their territories Germany’s preoccupation with war in Europe (on two fronts) allows Great Britain to seize some of Germany’s territories around the world

What about the US? The US tried to remain neutral but as the war dragged on it became difficult Involvement into war grew out of naval war between Germany and Great Britain Germany and Great Britain set up blockades of each other, preventing goods from moving Germany used unrestricted submarine warfare to enforce the blockade Passenger ships were sunk, Lusitania is an example

The US enters the war Reasons: Unrestricted submarine warfare by Germany Sinking of the Lusitania, Americans killed Zimmerman Note In early 1917, British naval intelligence intercepted and decrypted a telegram sent by German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to the German Ambassador in Mexico City. The telegram promised the Mexican Government that Germany would help Mexico recover the territory it had ceded to the United States following the Mexican-American War. In return for this assistance, Germany asked for Mexican support in the war.

How did the Lusitania contribute to drawing the US into WWI?  Sunk by a German U-boat, killed 128 U.S. civilians, 1,198 people total. Describe the Lusitania’s route. Where was it when it sank? Supposed to zig-zag and change course frequently DID NOT, off the southern coast of Ireland What mysteries were researchers able to solve? America used it, retrospectively, as a justification joining the war, but not at the time it was sunk.
