First Principles Devil and Satan

Devil and Satan Devil Satan Heb.2:14 Acts 5:1,2 Mat.4:1-10 Mat.16:23 1. Set a section in your Bible entitled "DEVIL, SATAN" noting the different sections and list the Bible passages supporting each section. Devil Satan Heb.2:14 Acts 5:1,2 Mat.4:1-10 Mat.16:23 2Tim.3:3 James 1:14

Devil and Satan Name six things personified in Scripture and then explain how this is helpful in showing the Devil isn't some powerful fallen angel that tempts us to do evil. Sin – as king sin, Rm.5:21 Grace – as a king, Rm.5:21 Wisdom – as a woman, Pro.3:13-15 Riches – mammon of unrighteousness, Mt.6:24 Scripture – as a preacher, Gal 3:8 Israel – as a virgin, Jer.31:4 Many things are personified in scripture including the devil which is a personification of humans who falsely accuse. 1 Peter5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: The devil here was the Roman emperor and his angels ( Roman servants) who arrested and falsely accused the Christians and threw them to the lions.

Devil and Satan 3. List three Scriptures showing that even though Christ used the words Devil, and Satan, as did the people of his day, he didn't believe in the Greek ideas associated with them. (Hint: Look under the section "Biblical use of Greek vocabulary and false beliefs") Mt. 12:22-30 the Ekronite god Baalzebub Jesus used but obviously neither Jesus or the Pharisees believed in this god. The parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus where Jesus used the false beliefs of his day to illustrate though one rose from the dead they still wouldn’t believe in the resurrection. John 5:1-8 is another example where Jesus used the false beliefs in healing the impotent man. Mk. 8:33 Jesus called Peter Satan

Devil and Satan 4. If you were asked who the Devil and Satan were in the Bible, what would you say they are and what scriptures would you use to support yourself? Both Devil and Satan are used as a personification of human nature when sin is allowed to reign. Romans5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Peter5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Revelation2:10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, …

Devil and Satan 5. Make up a question that would put someone who believes in a fallen angel Devil on the defensive. Why would Jesus take on a flesh and blood body to destroy the devil? Hebrews2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

Devil and Satan How did Jesus destroy the power of the devil in Hebrews 2:14? Hebrews2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; Since the devil is the personification of human nature and Jesus was born with this nature. A way to destroy its power over him was to die. To be raised however needed breaking the curse (Sin = Death). This required being tried in all points and being sinless. Once the curse was broken Jesus was also able to save us by removing the curse (sin=death). He does this being our mediator making possible forgiveness of sin.

Devil and Satan If the devil isn't the source of sin, what or who is? The source is human nature which is mortal, sin prone, deceitful and wicked. Jeremiah17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? Romans 7:19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

Devil and Satan 8. Who do you think Satan was in Job 1:6 and give your reasons why? Job1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. We are not told who Job’s adversary was. It could have been one of Job’s so-called friends. Notice however Job never attributes his tribulations to a fallen angel but to God who had afflicted him. (Job 19:21; 42:11) Job19:21 Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me. Job42:11 … and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him:

Devil and Satan 9. Who do you think the devil was in Mat.4:1 and give your reasons why? Matthew4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. Since Jesus was given the holy spirit without measure, he didn’t need a further power outside himself to be tempted nor would he have been tempted for he would have seen through whoever it was. Jesus would never have allowed himself to be led by a fallen angel devil. The temptation was subjective for Jesus was in the wilderness. Matthew4:5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

Devil and Satan 10. Show that Rev. 12:7-9 uses symbolic language and can not be taken literally? Revelation12:7And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Jesus didn’t believe there was war in heaven since he taught his disciples the Lord’s prayer. Verses 3,4 say the dragon’s tail drew a third part of the stars and cast them to the earth.
