Flip Learning For next lesson you need to: TASK: A handout on the motives of redeemers has been uploaded onto the homework section of OneNote Use the handout to make revision notes on each motive. Your notes should be formatted as either: A quiz Flashcards Mind Map Cornell Notes

What were the motives driving the redeemers? Last lesson we looked at who the redeemers were and what they did, this lesson we want to look at what their motives were for doing what they did. Good learning: Recap on who the redeemers were Great learning: Explain the different motives driving the redeemers Even better: Evaluate the main motive driving redeemers

RECAP: who were the redeemers? Last lesson we looked at opposition to Radical Reconstruction and redemption. Before we start to look at the motives, lets see what you can remember? Task: Try and complete the following diagram you have been given with as much detail as possible. You only have 10 minutes. Worksheet found at end of powerpoint. Could get to finish off for homework to create a piece of revision material. There is also a prompt version on slide 10 which you could have up whilst completing it. Good learning: Recap on who the redeemers were Great learning: Explain the different motives driving the redeemers Even better: Evaluate the main motive driving the redeemers

What are the different motives behind the redeemers? Next, we need to see what the reasons were for people opposing Radical Reconstruction and the motives for doing what they did in the South. TASK: On your whiteboards make a list of all the different reasons why people in the South would oppose Reconstruction Some of the different reasons include: Racist attitudes Economic problems Response to corruption Idea of ‘home-rule’ (similar to state rights) Determined to resist Northern military occupation. TASK: Write these down in the order of importance as to what you think the main reason is. Explain your view as it stands now. Good learning: Understand the different types of resistance to Radical Reconstruction Great learning: Explain what impact the resistance had Even better: Evaluate how the South was able to be ‘redeemed’.

What evidence is there to support the different motives? Now that we know the different motives behind the opposition, we need to see what examples we have to support that this were the case. TASK 1: You have each been one of the motives to look at and some information with regards to it. I would like you to create a teaching resource to show how your motive was key in driving opposition against Reconstruction. You will then use this to teach other groups when they come to visit your desk shortly. TASK 2: On the worksheet you have been given, fill in the relevant box on the motive with examples to support it and then given it a mark out of 5 for how much you think it was a key motive for driving opposition. Could split in to Kagan Good learning: Understand the different types of resistance to Radical Reconstruction Great learning: Explain what impact the resistance had Even better: Evaluate how the South was able to be ‘redeemed’.

‘The Southern ‘Redeemers’ were motivated by racist attitudes in their quest to redeem the South.’ Assess the validity of this view. Now you have collected all you evidence, you are now going to plan your answer to the above question. TASK: 1. What criteria would you have in response to this question? 2. Complete the rest of the fishbone with the arguments in support along the top and arguments against along the bottom. CHALLENGE: Try and make links between the arguments and also when you are explaining think about sustaining an argument either in support or against the statement Good learning: Understand the different types of resistance to Radical Reconstruction Great learning: Explain what impact the resistance had Even better: Evaluate how the South was able to be ‘redeemed’.

Wasn’t the main motive Was the main motive ‘The Southern ‘Redeemers’ were motivated by racist attitudes in their quest to redeem the South.’ Assess the validity of this view. Redemption and the Redeemers The situation in the South What is redemption What impact did Democrat control have on Radical Reconstruction? (look at impact on acts and amendments) Ku Klux Klan Which Southern states came under Democrat control and when? Political/open violence What other factors made redemption possible? Explain. Impact of violence

Redemption and the Redeemers The situation in the South What is redemption Republicans dominant, inc. scalawags and carpetbaggers Good education Black people having more rights, etc. In the context of southern politics, the term Redemption refers to the overthrow or defeat of Radical Republicans (white and black) by white Democrats, marking the end of the Reconstruction era in the South. In addition to its biblical allusions, the term also reflects the widely held belief among white southerners of a time that the Republican state regimes had been inefficient and corrupt. Also that the "Redeemers" who re-established white Democratic control of the state also restored effective and honest government. Impact on 15th Amendment Failure of 1875 CRA Think about who they were, their goals, what they did and the impact they had. What impact did Democrat control have on Radical Reconstruction? (look at impact on acts and amendments) Ku Klux Klan Which Southern states came under Democrat control and when? Political/open violence Refer to groups like red shirts and also the riots and massacres that took place. What was the aim here? Impact? Look at textbook page 211 1000s of black people were injured or killed during this time Reduced number of black votes Made Grant introduce the forces act which became unpopular due to increased federal presence It helped to stop progression for black people on a state level Help the Democrats regain control of the South The North no longer wanted to continue the fight to help back people – in there eyes it was over. Prompt sheet – could have up on board to guide. Economic depression Corruption and scandals Split in party Not able to unite black and white people What other factors made redemption possible?
