Newsflash!

What’s happened? The Thane of Cawdor has been executed The King (Duncan) has named his son, Malcolm as his successor Macbeth realises this is another barrier Macbeth has sent his wife a letter, filling her in on the events with the Witches. She is keen on the idea of being Queen! Macbeth enters while she is reading the letter and tells her that Duncan is coming to stay that night…

Lady Macbeth… is regarded as one of the most evil women in Literature – not because of what she does – but because of how she speaks and the attitude she has.

At the time… There were traditional views of men and women, compared with now. Because women produce milk for babies, they were seen as being naturally caring, nurturing, gentle – caused by the processes involved in the production of milk. Men, with testosterone (though it wasn’t known as that), were seen to be naturally aggressive, violent, capable of cruelty.

Look at the SOLILOQUY and Watch the Performance Watch out for references or language that relates to the information on the last slide…

Word Sort You have a sheet with words down the left, all spoken in Lady Macbeth’s soliloquy. Categorise them. How can you group them together eg spoon, knife, fork would all be categorised as CUTLERY. Angry, sad, happy would be categorised as EMOTIONS Scalpel, bed, patient could be categorised as HOSPITAL WORDS Use the Venn eg sheet to do this

Colour Code Look at my colour coded attempt at this task and then colour-code your own, with your own categories – and mine if you like.

Add Techniques Down the right hand side of your sheet are techniques. Annotate your colour coded version with the techniques you think are being used.
