Crime Prevention Ottawa: Community Safety and Personal Safety Presentation for the Vanier Community Association March 25, 2019 Nancy Worsfold, Crime Prevention Ottawa

Building Community, Building Safety for All

Neighbourhood Theory of Change

Important Risk Factors to Consider (From the World Health Organization)

Home Takeovers A home takeover is a situation in which a legitimate tenant or homeowner finds themselves unsafe, physically, financially or psychologically, due to the presence of a person(s) in their home that they may or may not be able to remove While each situation is unique, there are generally 4 types: Drug associated/gang takeovers; Takeovers of the formerly homeless; Takeovers of elderly adults; General takeovers of people with vulnerabilities (physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities, mental health issues, isolation) Resolutions usually involve a series of interventions and support from a number of service providers

Your Personal Safety

Crime “Opportunity” Theory: Protect your car and property While the SARA model is useful as a way of organizing the approach to recurring problems, it is often very difficult to figure out just exactly what the real problem is. The problem analysis triangle (sometimes referred to as the crime triangle) provides a way of thinking about recurring problems of crime and disorder. This idea assumes that crime or disorder results when (1) likely offenders and; (2) suitable targets come together in; (3) time and space, in the absence of capable guardians for that target. The Problem Analysis Triangle is also referred to as The Crime Triangle. Source: Center for Problem-Oriented Policing, http://www.popcenter.org/about-triangle.htm

Parenting and Crime Prevention What You Can Do As a Parent: Monitor activities Communications – Keep talking Consistency – Stay with your rules Be a good example What to Encourage in Your Child: Hope and hopefulness Connection and belonging Empathy for victims
