Where do trees get their mass? Think to yourself about the question below… Do NOT discuss your answer with others. Where do trees get their mass? (In other words, how do massive trees grow from tiny saplings?)

Where do trees get their mass? Most people can’t answer this question correctly Even college graduates (from prestigious universities such as M.I.T.) What was your answer? Nutrients in the soil? The soil (dirt) itself? Water from the ground? Sunlight? All of these answers are WRONG (at least 95% wrong) The actual answer may surprise you.

Where do Trees Get Their Mass?

What do plants need to grow? Most people can tell you that plants need… Water (H2O) Sunlight (radiant energy) Many people forget that plants also need… Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

Photosynthesis Plants take in water from the ground and carbon dioxide from the air (and sunlight). They produce oxygen and glucose (food).

Photosynthesis What does photosynthesis look like from a chemistry perspective?

Where do the reactants come from? Water comes from… Rain (collected by roots) Carbon dioxide comes from… Air (absorbed by leaves) Where does much of the CO2 in the air come from?

plant/animal matter decomposes fossil fuels are burned Where does CO2 come from? CO2 is released when… animals breathe plant/animal matter decomposes fossil fuels are burned

Cellular Respiration We breathe in oxygen (O2) We breathe out carbon dioxide (CO2) Carbon dioxide is the product of a chemical process your body uses to produce energy for life-functions.

What do people need to live? Oxygen (O2) Food Where do these things come from? PLANTS

What does cellular respiration look like from a chemistry perspective? Do the products look familiar? What about the reactants?

THE CARBON CYCLE Carbon Cycle The products of cellular respiration are the reactants of photosynthesis! The products of photosynthesis are the reactants of cellular respiration! This illustrates a significant part of… THE CARBON CYCLE

Sunlight IN PHOTOSYNTHESIS __CO2 + __H2O  __C6H12O6 + __O2 6 6 6 plants (and some other organisms) use sunlight to produce food (carbohydrates) from carbon dioxide and water. REACTANTS Carbon Dioxide & Water PRODUCTS Carbohydrates (sugars) & Oxygen EQUATION __CO2 + __H2O  __C6H12O6 + __O2 Sunlight IN 6 6 6

A.T.P. OUT CELLULAR RESPIRATION __C6H12O6 + __O2  __CO2 + __H2O 6 6 6 organisms convert biochemical energy from nutrients (food) into adenosine triphosphate (ATP – “energy”) and waste products. YOUR ASSIGNMENT: CREATE A POSTER EXPLAINING THE CARBON CYCLE An example will be displayed (next slide) You don’t have to copy it…be creative! You must include: The reactants and products involved in photosynthesis and cellular respiration The balanced chemical equations describing these reactions The energy exchange (“sunlight” and “ATP”)
