Pearl Harbor, D-Day, Wartime Technology

What happened…? Due to Japan’s participation in WWII, FDR cut off trading relations with Japan, even though Japan relied on the U.S. for vital resources. Sunday, December 7, 1941 at 7:53am, Japan organized and executed a “sneak attack” on the U.S. Naval Base @ Pearl Harbor. There was no formal declaration of war against the U.S.

U.S. is at War!!! Allies Axis Great Britain USSR United States France Germany Italy Japan

A War on Two Fronts… European theater was commanded by General Dwight D. Eisenhower Pacific theater was commanded by Douglas MacArthur

European Theater Pacific Theater

Wartime diplomacy Atlantic Charter Meetings (1941) – Roosevelt and Churchill met to discuss building a lasting peace and establishing free governments Casablanca (1943) – Roosevelt and Churchill discussed “victory on all fronts” with an “unconditional surrender.” Cairo (1943) – FDR, Churchill, and Chiang Kai-Shek met to plan the Normandy invasion.

D-Day invasion: june 6, 1944 Allies plan to invade beaches of Normandy (France) across the English Channel. Began with overnight parachute landings, massive air attacks, naval bombardments, and an early morning amphibious landing. Costly, in terms of lives lost, but defeat on Germans was largest in the war.
