Comparison of Mass Shootings in 2017 & 2018 in the United States Introduction Results Mass Shootings in 2018 After examining the data of mass shootings in the United States in 2017 and 2018, there were a total of 686 shootings, 346 in 2017, and 340 in 2018. Before examining the data, the largest shooting was in Las Vegas, NV in 2017 when there were 59 fatalities and 417 injured. In 2018, the largest shooting was in Parkland, FL, a school shooting leaving 17 dead and another 17 injured. I thought there would be a large decrease in shootings with increased protection in larger cities (Warr). In 2017, there were 437 fatalities compared to 373 in 2018. The amount injured also significantly dropped from 1803 injured to 1347 injured. Both years, the Chicago area produced the most total number of shootings (30-2017) and (27-2018). Conclusions Thankfully, the amount of shootings went down, but the amount of fatalities and injuries dropped significantly. The fatalities dropped by 456. In further research, comparing the United States mass shooting data to other countries of similar populations would tell us how severe this issue truly is. (Brennan- Galvin). Figure 1: Shows the total number of Mass Shootings in 2018 labeled by county or city for The United States. Data The data source that I chose to use was the Gun Violence Archives with a large number of mass shootings in 2017 and 2018. The largest numbers of shootings occurred in the four of the six largest cities in the United States: Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, New York City, according to The World Population Review. Mass Shootings in 2017 Bibliography Gun Violence Archive. February 2019. World Population Review. February 2019. Warr, Mark. Fear of Crime in the United States, Brennan-Galvin, Ellen. Crime and Violence in an Urbanizing World. Acknowledgements Methods I would like to thank Drew University., the Andrew Mellon Foundation, Professor Lisa Jordan, and The Gun Violence Archive for allowing me the opportunity to conduct this research. . Creating this data, I visited the Gun Violence Archives and downloaded their mass shooting statistics in 2017 and 2018 to Excel. From there, I downloaded the tables to Google Maps and analyzed the data. Figure 2: Shows the total number of Mass Shootings in 2017 labeled by county or city for The United States.
