IAPS SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS 2020 8th to 13th March ITALY Ponte di Legno and Passo Tonale

TRANSFERS AND LOCATION Passo Tonale is, by road, about two hours from Bergamo to the south, or two and a half hours from Verona and 100 km from Bolzano in the north. It is a small, quiet mountain village sitting at approximately 2,100 m above sea level and linked to neighbouring town Ponte di Legno. Schools should fly to Bergamo and transfers will be organised when final numbers are known. Milan has three airports and Bergamo is an hour closer to the resort. Second choice airport would be Linate. Both villages sit at the base of mountains that rise steeply to over 3,500m. The record of good snow is excellent. .

SKI AREA

PASSO TONALE Races Passo Tonale is surrounded by mountains with long ski runs to suit all standards. It has one of the best records of snow in Italy. Children will be skiing blue, red or black runs. No off piste skiing is offered in this trip. The races are designed to encourage Intermediate skiers (parallel turns) as well as more advance racers. Advanced skiers (good parallel and/ or carving turns with some race experience on snow or dry slope). Training will take place on practice courses for the days leading up to the event. The first day will be an opportunity for children to practise their skiing technique generally.

Giant Slalom Adamello have a practice course which is set up beside the race course. The courses are challenging but are designed for children. Adamello will provide the course, the electronic timing equipment, course judges and first aid. The race is a Giant Slalom but it is a children’s Giant Slalom. It is set for children who may make longer arcs to complete turns and is not so long that skiers should build up too much speed. We will be following ESSKIA (English Schools Ski Association) rules for judging but the tone of the event is to encourage and support the children in their endeavours. Our primary objective is for children to develop their skills and to build self-esteem and confidence.

Link Resorts Passo and Ponte Schools will be accommodated in either the Dolomite or Mirella Hotels. The Mirella is in Ponte di Legno and the Dolomite Hotel is in Passo Tonale. The link between the resorts is good and there is a fast gondola linking Passo Tonale to Ponte di Legno making it a large ski area. Ski passes work in Ponte di Legno, Temu and Passo. Temu is another resort in the same and there may be opporunities to ski there too. It features the Italian Olympic downhill course.

Ski Clothing The Base Layer The Soft Shell The Hard Shell Thermal underwear, thick or thermal socks The Soft Shell Fleeces, thin layers, sweaters, wind stoppers, scarves. The mid and base layers provide the warmth, head bands or caps that fit under helmets The Hard Shell The waterproof layer (most important to have a waterproof jacket). Well fitted boots; skins or salopettes, jacket and helmet (compulsory for all skiers) Goggles, sunglasses and sun cream Lip salve

HOTELS DOLOMITI and MIRELLA The Hotels Dolomiti and the Mirella are both excellent hotels. They are friendly, spacious, family run hotels. Service, cleanliness and food are all excellent. The Bulferetti family, our hosts, are our prime contact with the resort and through them we have access to all supporting services. Both hotels have large dining rooms, quiet TV and reading areas and playrooms where children can make a noise without disturbing other guests. The Mirella has a swimming pool. Aprés Ski Clothing Comfortable indoor clothing A pair of shoes that would be suitable for wearing indoors which might double as a pair of outdoor walking shoes. So, slippers and walking boots, or perhaps just soft walking boots, or moon boots. A hat, same ski jacket, jeans or tracksuit, tops and something to wear for the disco and gala dinner. A pair of swimmers and swim hat too!

FOOD Family run hotels are the best because whilst there are set menus the staff are happy to make whatever the children like to eat. Breakfast is continental: bread rolls, jams, cold meat, cheese, boiled eggs, cereals, yoghurt, hot chocolate and juices. Lunch is two courses at the hotel. It will be pre-arranged with the manager but will be simple and may consist of pizza, soup, sandwiches and hot chips, or pasta and a dessert. Dinner is three courses and will consist of an antipasta (mainly vegetables), then a second course of pasta or soup, then a main course of lasagna, or schnitzels, chicken or pork. The manager has stressed that he wants to feed the children whatever they want.

CLOTHING TICK LIST For skiing in all weathers think:-base (thermal), middle (fleece) and outer (waterproof). Light, weather resistant materials are readily available. Please note that a water resistant outer layer is unsuitable for skiing. It must be waterproof. Helmets can be hired if necessary and they are compulsory. Ryanair won’t let you overpack without an added cost! Ski Jacket Salopettes/ (race suit optional) Hat./helmet (compulsory for all) Goggles/sunglasses Gloves (at least 2 pairs) 2/3 pairs thermal socks 2 sets of thermal underwear Cotton roll neck tops Moon Boots or similar Sweatshirt Bum Bag, lip salve, high factor sun cream 3 or more casual outfits Underwear Trainers Pyjamas 1 Towel Wash Bag Swimming costume (school regulation one) Swimming hat (compulsory for boys & girls)

Health and Safety Contact with local doctors and pharmacies is well provided. All schools will need to have photocopies of their children’s European heath cards and ensures that their school insurance fully covers the trip. The children are at high altitude where the sun is strong so they have to obey the rule of always wearing: GLOVES, HAT/HELMET, JACKET,GOGGLES/SUNGLASSES and apply SUNTAN LOTION at least twice per day.
