Education Strategic Planning Addendum on Goals and Objectives from January 20, 2018 Kathleen Kramer VP Education, AESS

Goals vs. Objectives Suggest we adopt consistent usage Definition Desired outcomes of efforts over time Intended results produced by implementing strategies Timeframe Long-term Near-term Magnitude Major Incremental Outcomes General Specific & measurable Purpose of actions Movement in a direction leading to desired results Aimed at accomplishing certain tasks Example Retire by age 65 Must save $20,000 this year to stay on track Hierarchy Goals control Objectives Objectives can modify a goal 7/8/2019

Education 3-Year Goals Strengthen the Distinguished Lecturer Program and Services, including tutorials. Develop and improve programs that support those underrepresented in our membership, including Young Professional (YP) and student members Increase awareness and opportunity for educational programs

Goal 1: Grow the Distinguished Lecturer Program Deliver more DLs and ensuring the program is aligning to meet the needs more members SMART Objective: Increase the number of Chapters and Sections with DL’s presented (Specific) year over year for 2018- keyed technically and geographically (Measurable and Timed) Led by Individual committee members assigned regionally and sub-regionally. LoMonte – R1/R7 (NY), Kaplan – R2/R3 (DC), Williams (R10/Oceana), Gustafsson – R8(Europe) , Kramer – R6/R9 Will strengthen our DL program (Goal 1) and increase awareness and opportunity for educational programs (Goal 3) (Relevant) 7/8/2019

Deliver more DLs and ensuring the program is aligning to meet the needs more members SMART Objective: Increase the number of Chapters and Sections with DL’s presented (Specific) year over year for 2018- keyed technically and geographically (Measurable and Timed) Comments on this objective: The number of DLs given and the number of lecturers have both increased dramatically in recent years. It would not be “smart” or “reasonable” to set dramatic further increases in either of those as an objective. Geographically, we have been supporting R10/Asia with 40% of budget support. It is not underserved in those terms. Technically, we have very high representation in Radar, and it is in some ways over-represented in terms of lecturers and DLs given. 7/8/2019

Short-Term Activities Related to Objective Education Committee members are charged with some geographic (and technical) advocacy Individuals consider report for their areas technically and geographically. Utilize improved geographic and technical distribution. DLs should be given where we have concentrations of members. Coordination with Member Services is essential Chapter formation should be supported and encouraged – work with and support Wicks’ committee efforts Resource Center and short course initiative should be supported within this. 7/8/2019

Goal 2: Increase Education activities’ interaction with and for those underrepresented in our membership Include and plan for increased interaction with Young Professionals, Students, WIE, and improve technical and geographic alignment SMART Objective: Coordinate with Conferences, YP, and WIE to increase the AESS-Education activities at AESS conferences (Specific) increasing activities and conferences involved year over year (Measurable and Timed) Led by Individual committee members assigned by conference. LoMonte – Radar, Kaplan – Fusion, Williams International Radar, Gustafsson – Fusion, Kramer – DASC and ICCST Will increase activities for underrepresented (Goal 2) and increase awareness and opportunity for educational programs (Goal 3) (Relevant) 7/8/2019

Short-Term Activities Related to Objective Conference-targeted YP and similar events Activities within major AESS conferences, including tutorials and resource center YP and WIE conference activities involving Education and or DLs Increased visibility for and promotion of Robert T. Hill Award Radar Summer School 2018 Increased YP/Student and WIE involvement and visibility in AESS Education Offerings including Distinguished Lecturer diversity of lecturers Local Student and WIE Themed Activities IEEE Rising Stars DL and Support Fundamentals Tutorials Undergraduate Senior Project Awards and IEEE-HKN 7/8/2019

Goal 3: Increase awareness and opportunity for educational programs Improve and expand offerings through Resource Center and the promotion of our offerings through publications and web. SMART Objective: Coordinate with Publications to promote and report on Education Programs in each 2018 QEB and AE Systems Magazine (Specific) resulting in increased resource center offerings for 2018 compared to 2016 Increased nominations to Robert T Hill for 2018 compared to 2017 Increased DL nominations for 2018 compared to 2016 (Measurable and Timed) Led by Individual committee members by conference and geography By publication/issue? Will increase awareness(Goal 3) and supports activities for underrepresented (Goal 2) (Relevant) 7/8/2019

Goal 3: Increase awareness and opportunity for educational programs Objective: Improve and expand offerings through Resource Center Objective: Increase Reach and Relevance of Online Tutorials Objective: Provide Guidance for Short Courses Performance metrics for measuring progress Use of Resource Center tutorials and related offerings Addition of tutorials to Resource Center. Assigned to: Jason Williams on Resource Center with committee-wide effort to leverage conference tutorials into center. Relevant to goal(s) to Strengthen the Distinguished Lecturer Program and Services, including tutorials. Results will of metrics inform renewal and call for DL process in later 2018. Increase awareness and opportunity for educational programs Time period for performance Annual 7/8/2019

Short Term Activities Related to Objectives DL materials updated annually to improve promotion of AESS and access to Educational programs. Hard copies distributed to many at Radar/BoG Include DL related information and news appropriate to that media in QEB, Systems Magazine, Transactions, social media. QEB profile on Robert T Hill winner Assign individual committee members to conferences to look for tutorials and other content Update and augment Resource Center archives Apply the Chapter Recording initiative? 7/8/2019
