By Juleeann Fisher Shared Housing Services Thinking Outside the One-Bedroom Apartment Box: Non-Traditional Affordable Housing Options Solutions for Individual Homeless Adults: A National Conference February 22, 2019 Hello everyone, my name is Juleeann Fisher and I am with Shared Housing Services as the program coordinator for the Adult Homesharing program. By Juleeann Fisher Shared Housing Services

1930’s I would like to take you back to 10930’s imagine if you will….

1930’s Great depression hits…

2019 So what does this look like today?

Let’s say, half of this audience… Let’s say, half of this audience…..You are still in your late 20’s and single.

Now the other half of the audience …..you are in your mid 70’s.

Those of you in your 20’s are still working

On the other side we have the seniors who are going to lose their home if they choose to keep their health, or possible damage their health if they choose to keep their home.

The younger person moves in, does not have to sleep in their car, works hard at their 2 jobs to pay off a good chunk of their student loans and lands a great job. Both parties have now benefited from home sharing using existing housing.

“Homesharing” People are slowly rediscovering shared housing across the nation and reaping its rewards.

“Homesharing”: living arrangement where two or more unrelated people share a house or apartment Home sharing is a living arrangement in which two or more unrelated people share a house or apartment. Home sharing is an increasingly important component in the quest to use existing housing stock more effectively and create more affordable room rental options.

Now lets take a look at this scenario without the help of shared housing. Members of the audience in your 20’s

And you seniors did your best to balance home bills with medical bills but it became overwhelming and unfortunately you lost your home.

“Homesharing” Had we stepped in and introduced homes sharing we would have one person housed, a home saved and no additional homeless. It is a win-win situation!

Water Demonstration Water/pool/homeless demonstration

“Homesharing” programs in the U.S. Currently there are around 60 home sharing programs up and running around the country “38 Identified Locations

Benefits of “Homesharing”: Using existing homes Homes are not at risk of foreclosure Work for services People are being housed Shared Housing uses existing homes and dwellings without having to raise taxes to build more affordable housing. Homes are not being foreclosed on and sitting empty. Yardwork is being taken care of. Homeless people are getting roofs over their heads and are no longer on the streets.

Benefits of being a Home Provider People choose to be Home Providers for a multitude of reasons

College Students at Risk of Homelessness: There is one vulnerable population that people don’t often think of, and that is students. In Washington state where I live there is one homeless student in every single classroom.
