Dragon Naturally Speaking App By: LeeAnn Seidl

Learning Objectives Students will be able to use the application to turn their speech into text to help them complete their essay. This activity is for 7th grade students.

Description of the Lesson Students will be given an essay assignment that provides information over any scientist of their choosing. The essay will be 2-3 pages doubled spaced. They will be given in class time to work on the essay, but if additionally time is needed then they will complete the assignment at home. In order for the students to complete the essay successfully, some students with disabilities will need assistance typing their papers. This in-class time will take place in our computer lab and will take up to a week. If students need more time they will have to complete the assignment at home. I will be helping students research their scientist and help them format their paper.

What is Dragon Naturally Speaking? Dragon Naturally Speaking is an educational application that turns speech into text. This helps students who have a hard time typing or writing. This app gives the students full control of text size and font. This application can be downloaded on a computer, tablet, or phone. An example of how to use this app can be found here.

Purpose of Using the Technology This technology will help equalize who can perform this assignment because students who have a hard time writing or typing can easily perform these actions with this application. This application will also help out freeing up some of the teacher’s time so every student can have help with the assignment. The teacher will not have to sit down with the student and help write or type their paper because this app with assist them with that.

Assessment of the Lesson I will observe the students while in the lab. If I see them affectively working on their paper, I will give them full participation grades. I will also be reading their final draft of their papers. I will grade them on content, grammar, punctuation and effort.
