Presentation transcript:

Lesson Starter: answer in sentences In the correct order, write down the colours that make up white light Explain how rainbows form What colour refracts a) the most b) the least?

Lesson Starter answers Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet The droplets of water act as a prism, light is refracted as it enters and spreads to form the spectrum The light waves are refracted as they enter and leave the prism. The shorter the wavelength of the light, the more it is refracted. As a result, red light is refracted the least and violet light is refracted the most, causing the coloured light to spread out to form a spectrum.

Filters coloured light from white light. Filters are used to make How do they work? White light Only red light is transmitted Red Filter is made up of 3 primary colours The green and blue light is absorbed. The red light is transmitted.

What happens to the colour of an object when you place a filter around it?

Using filters of primary colours: watch A filter absorbs some colours of white light and lets other colours through to create coloured light. A red filter absorbs all colours… …apart from red light. A blue filter absorbs all colours… …apart from blue light. A green filter absorbs all colours... …apart from green light.

Using filters of secondary colours A magenta filter absorbs all colours… …apart from red and blue. A cyan filter absorbs all colours… …apart from green and blue. A yellow filter absorbs all colours... …apart from red and green.

Why does a red snooker ball look red in white light? Remember white light is made of a spectrum of colours. The snooker ball absorbs all the colours of the spectrum EXCEPT red, so red light is reflected into our eye. The snooker ball appears red.

Try These what primary colour or colours of light will be transmitted by these filters?

Filters let certain colours of light pass through, but absorb all other colours. Object

Answer in sentences in your jotter Which colours of light will a blue filter absorb? Which colour of light will a blue filter transmit? Red, green and blue light is passed through a red filter then a green filter. Which colour will be transmitted?
