Authority by Implication Matthew 22:23-32 Preached first in July 2004. Also in June of 2006 Hebrews 7:1-12

Definitions Imply – to involve or indicate by inference, association, or necessary consequence rather than by direct statement. To express indirectly. Infer- to derive as a conclusion from facts or premises Necessary – of an inevitable nature; inescapable.

Jesus on Implication Matthew 22:23-32 “You are mistaken, not knowing the scriptures “Concerning the resurrection” (The text from Gen. 26:24, etc.) teaches something regarding the resurrection “I am” implies the resurrection. We can infer from the present tense that God is the God of the living. Hence the resurrection.

Hebrews on Implication Melchizedek blessed Abraham Fact: “The lesser is blessed by the better” Melchizedek blessing Abraham implies that the Priesthood of Melchizedek is greater than the priesthood of Aaron. We can infer that Christ is a greater high priest (cf. vs. 13-28).

Acts 16:13-15 A Bad Example Infant Baptism: No knowledge of makeup of household “But Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.’” (Matt. 19:14) “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16).

Acts 20:6-7 A Good Example The first day of the week comes about every week. “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8). “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:42)

Conclusion We must have a “thus saith the Lord for all of our practices.” Sometimes that instruction from God is implied. If we can “necessarily” conclude anything from scripture, it is as binding as any explicit command.
