HAVE VARROA MITES BECOME RESISTANT TO FLUVALINATE? KOOTENAY REGION HAVE VARROA MITES BECOME RESISTANT TO FLUVALINATE?

WHY THE CONCERN? 1. Heavy over-winter losses 2. Spring build-up failures 3. High varroa infestation in spite of treatment

CRESTON VARROA MITES

TEST DESIGN Cover a wide geographical area and include both commercial and hobby beekeepers. Test following honey removal – no mite treatment Select strongest colonies for testing. Take three, 24 hour mite drop counts: day 1 and day 10 (Apistan). Day 11 (CheckMite+).

RECOMMENDATIONS 1. Monitor mite levels 2. Test for mite resistance 3. Vary the mite treatment 4. Use chemicals as prescribed 5. Treat only when necessary
