Garbage on Wheels
Government Initiative The Delhi Municipal Act was enacted on 28th December 1957.
Need of Garbage collection Waste material has been used, re-used and recycled in the natural evolution process since time immemorial. But Alas!
Effects of increase in population A counter process of waste generation started ----- drains were chocked with filth and garbage.
Challenges The collection of heaps of garbage and transporting it to the designated landfill was the gigantic task. Shopkeepers and consumers used to throw their garbage on open sites. Seven open dumpsites.
Continuous struggle Initially residents were not showing interest. Implementation of concept of garbage on wheel. Meeting with residents individually and in groups. Motivating people to cooperate with the North Delhi Municipal corporation.
Pro-Active approach North Delhi Municipal Corporation took a pro-active step to tuck away 9000 metric tones of waste with the collaboration of a private company. 800 metric tones of filth from Rohini and Civil Line. Public private partnership model.
Regulated waste management in Delhi Use of rickshaw cart. Collected garbage would be loaded on trucks and sent to landfills.
Collaboration with private company RamkyEnviro Engineers Ltd.(Reel) was taken into loop. A ray of hope … hoot of siren ….disposal of garbage….no heap…no filth… no bad smell….garbage on wheels….
Implementation of concept They collect garbage door to door. A slogan of garbage free Rohini ….was chanted with great zeal.
