X-Ray Endstation Design & Management/Commissioning Stefan Moeller

Outline Scope and Goals of X-ray Endstation Systems (XES) Management and Summary Schedule 2-D Detector Program Consolidation of XES instrumentation effort Status Challenges FY-05 Plan Summary

Scope and Goals The X-Ray Endstation Systems (XES) group will create the infrastructure required for experimenters to make best scientific use of the LCLS radiation safely XES will equip a complete instrument for Atomic Physics Experiments Coordinate all safety related aspects for the user environment and the experiments

The Endstation Systems will provide: Infrastructure for LCLS Experiments: Personnel protection systems (PPS) Protect people from x-rays and lasers Machine protection systems (MPS) Protect machine from users Network and computer support Cables, networks, servers, data storage Prototype detectors A suite of x-ray detectors for experiments Instrumentation for first Atomic Physics experiments: Beamline controls Synchronized laser system AP vacuum chambers, optics, sample handling, etc. Installation and Commissioning: Integration with rest of LCLS and with AP Station

2D X-Ray Detector Development Program Recommendation: Formalize 2D X-ray Detector work Document relationship between SLAC and Cornell Response: Established a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Cornell University Includes Statement of Work (SOW) Details a 4 year R&D plan, specs, cost and schedule, review process and milestones → MOU is in signing stage

2D X-Ray Detector Development Program Detector Specifications:

Development Plan Overview Time 1st year 2nd year 3rd year 4th year Reviews/ Milestones - Complete SOW - Award initial funding early 2005 - Progress review Fall 2005 - Major review early 2007 Decision to proceed with final development Fall 2007 - Acceptance tests early 2009 Activity - Design pixel electronics - Fabrication of small- scale test chips - Continue R&D of pixel electronics of small-scale fab Optimize design of small- scale fab - Design and fab of large- scale detector chips Design and build of readout electronics - Development, fabrication and delivery of final detector system Cost Estimate $150,000 $825,000 $1,050,000 $1,100,000

X-Ray Detector Project 1st. Meeting of the LCLS Detector Advisory Committee (2/28-3/1/05): Members: L. Strueder (MPI Extraterrestrische Physik, Garching) E. Eikenberry (Paul-Scherrer-Institut, SLS) Y. Amemiya (Univ. Tokyo) G. Derbyshire (Rutherford Appleton Lab.) E. Heijne (CERN) A. Walenta (Univ. Siegen) Recommendations: Proceed with 2 D Detector program at Cornell Start a streak camera project with LBL

Consolidation of XES instrumentation effort Old Plan: XES to build a generic set of instrument components Recently: Science User Meeting (Oct. 04) Most Recently: - Proposal of PIXEL Project (Photon Instrumentation for X-Ray Experiments at LCLS) - A separately funded instrumentation project (outside LCLS construction) New Plan: XES builds one instrument for soft x-ray Atomic Physics studies

Rework of XES Schedule LCLS Endstation Systems will focus on one station: Soft X-ray Atomic Physics (AMO) XES will still provide global infrastructure for experimenters: Network, PPS, MPS Other WBS items will be reprogrammed for AMO station: Controls, vacuum, laser system

Near Experimental Hall The Near Experimental Hall Shops, setup space FEL beam Experimental hutches AMOP Hutch Soft X-ray

LCLS Atomic Physics Working Group: Louis DiMauro, chair (Ohio Univ.) Nora Berrah, co-chair (Western Michigan Univ.) Philip Bucksbaum (Univ. Michigan) Todd Ditmire (Univ. Texas-Austin) Gerhard Paulus (Texas A&M) Linda Young (ANL) 1st Report: LCLS Atomic Physics Working Group, Argonne National Lab, April 30, 2004 Workshop: Ultrafast Science and LCLS Experiments October 25 - 26, 2004 Meeting: LCLS Science Group Leaders, March 30-31, 2005

AMOP Hutch Layout Hutch #1 in NEH Rough Conceptual Design Optics: Monochromator, Focusing system Laser system (higher power) Sample System Chambers (sample, diagnostics) UHV system Detectors (particles, e, ions) Diagnostics (x rays, laser)

Impacts on XES Planning, Cost and Schedule Reworking schedule to focus on AMO station XES budget stays the same Schedule only affected in FY06 Hire Atomic Physicist as soon as possible Coordinate with AMOP working group and PIXEL

XES Status Reworking schedule to focus on AMO station Preparing to add personnel (Atomic and Detector Physicist) Starting the 2D X-Ray Detector Development Program MOU is in signing stage

Challenges Build-up of budget and staff in FY05-FY07 Delays in other LCLS areas (conv. construction) would impact schedule Exchange rate fluctuations for foreign procurements Few vendors (x-ray optics)

Plan for FY05 Hire Atomic Scientist and Detector Physicist Add Controls Engineer next Start detailed design of AMO and detectors Begin R&D on 2-D X-ray detector project No long-lead procurement

Summary The Endstation Systems will provide the infrastructure between the LCLS source and its users XES focuses on providing a complete station for AMO XES is starting to staff up, continue to hire in FY-06 Majority of work during FY-07and FY-08 Start with 2D Detector program now Prepare to incorporate latest improvements FH layout and FEE deflection mirror Coordinating with CF, XTOD and PIXEL project No long-lead procurements Risks exists for 2D Detector, but not a high-risk area for LCLS Coordinating with SLAC safety personnel regarding user safety
