In your notes... Correct each comma error: I took Angie, the one with the freckles, to the movies last night. You are, I am sure, telling the truth If I am correct, then she won’t enjoy dinner or the movie. Correct each apostrophe error: The McDonalds live in the upstairs apartment. All of my pens’ ink ran out. I wouldn’t do that if I were you.

Noun: person, place, thing, or idea. Proper noun: labels names, titles, cities/states/countries To Kill a Mockingbird, New York, Ms. Fierst Collective noun: labels a group Family, crew, team Concrete noun: can be identified using one of the five senses (taste, smell, touch, sight, hearing) Flowers, sunset, cookies, phone Abstract noun: labels an idea, quality, or state of mind Peace, culture, relaxation

Pronoun: used in place of a noun to avoid repetition I, me, mine, myself, she, he, hers, his, us, ours, etc. Ava had soccer practice after school. Ava had to get Ava’s homework done before Ava’s mom allowed Ava to go to practice. Ava got it done without a problem because Ava is a good student. Ava had soccer practice after school. She had to get her homework done before her mom allowed her to go to practice. Ava got it done without a problem because she is a good student.

Verb: word used to describe an action or state. Thinking, dancing, shopping, hit, ran, drives “Is” is a verb!! Can be a verb (She is lovely.) Can be a helping verb (He is running to the ball.)

Adverb: describes a verb, adjective, or other adverb. Answers a question: How? How much? How often? When? Often ends with “ly” Quickly, quietly, secretly

Adjective: describes, modifies, or gives more information about a noun or pronoun. Answers a question: Which one? What kind? How many? Large, purple, cute, ugly, heavy, happy

Prepositions: shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word. Picture a box! Usually indicates the position of something I looked for my keys in my purse. My dog ran along the track with me. Avoid ending sentences with prepositions! WRONG: Where did you get that bag from? CORRECT: From where did you get that bag?

Conjunction: used to connect clauses or sentences Coordinating conjunction: FANBOYS Subordinating conjunction: describe the relationship between a dependent clause and an independent clause As, because, before, since, if, than, that, though, unless, until, whenever, wherever, whereas, while, why Ex: We looked on top of the refrigerator, where Jenny often keeps a secret stash of candy.
