SUSTAINABILITY IN SCIENCE -THE FUTURE OF RESEARCH KCL’s researchers are providing solutions to some of the globe’s biggest challenges. Our aim is to make that research have an even bigger reach while reducing our societal and environmental impact. Laboratories are at the frontier of this effort. They are currently extremely energy intensive; using 2/3rds of all energy at KCL. But that also means they are where you can make the biggest difference. This guide provides a few simple actions for you to be conscious of to create a sustainable and safe laboratory. COLD STORAGE What can you do? Only store what’s necessary Defrost seals when necessary Allow heat to escape the back Consider running your freezer at -70C instead of -80C s this saves 30% of energy use). What are others doing? www.youtube.com/watch?v=mD5WIdwRSCs Not only is our campus a test-bed for pioneering environmental technology, but we offer a multitude off opportunities for students to make a difference in the world… and we’d like to share them with you! FUME CUPBOARDS BIO-SAFETY CABINETS LABORATORY WASTE What can you do? Close your fume cupboard sash. This can save thousands per year! Turn down/off if allowed What are others doing? http://wcec.ucdavis.edu/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Case-Study-SASH_Final.pdf BIO-SAFETY CABINETS Safety cabinets (when ducted) can use as much energy as a fume cupboard. What can you do? Power down when not in use! What are others doing? http://science.sciencemag.org/content /352/6285/614 LABORATORY WASTE Clinical waste can cost 5 times more to dispose than recycling/domestic, and requires much more energy to process. What are others doing? Segregate waste appropriately - packaging shouldn’t be put in hazardous/clinical waste For guidance see: INSERT LINK TO POLICY WHEN AVAILABLE Find out more: https://www.kcl.ac.uk/aboutkings/strategy/sustainability/get-involved/staff/sustainability-champions/lab-champions/sustainable-labs.aspx
WHAT ELSE CAN I DO? EQUIPMENT CHEMICAL MANAGEMENT Power down equipment like benchtop-autoclaves and drying cabinets when they are not in use. Free timers are available from sustainability@kcl.ac.uk Share equipment wherever possible! Before purchasing a new piece of equipment consider can you use on the existing core facilities instead? https://www.kcl.ac.uk/innovation/rese arch/corefacilities/index.aspx has a list of some of these facilities. CHEMICAL MANAGEMENT Chemical management can cost up to £1 for every £1 spent on the chemical itself! What can you do? Check if a chemical is already available prior to purchasing – systems like Quartzy or LabCup may be able to assist. Check with local lab management, and share where possible. WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?
