Humpty Dumpty First printed in 1810 At the time, humpty dumpty = clumsy person (not necessarily an egg), so the nursery rhyme was meant as a riddle Possible meanings: King Richard III and his defeat at the Battle of Bosworth Charles I, toppled by the Puritan majority in Parliament The downfall of Cardinal Wolsey at the hand of King Henry VIII A large cannon?!

Questions Historical Context: What is one potential TIME PERIOD and LOCATION the nursery rhyme originated from? First printed in 1810 (19th century), in England Historical Context: Using the time period from question one, what was the potential meaning for the rhyme?  Defeat of important person (king, cardinal, etc) Instrument of war Social Context: What does the rhyme reveal about people’s thinking during that time (example: what they valued and/or believed)? Possible Answer: People used rhyme to make fun of political leaders (SATIRE, POLITICAL CARTOONS)

Next, MODERNIZE it! NEXT: When you’re finished, create your own MODERNIZED version of the rhyme (on the back of this paper or on another sheet of paper). Create a visual if you have time!
