Communication for Internationally-Educated Health Professionals (CIEHP) Program

What is the CIEHP Program? The Communication for Internationally-Educated Health Professionals (CIEHP) Program is for: internationally-educated health professionals, such as, physicians, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. Note: The CIEHP Program is not the CHP Program (Communication for Health Care Professions). CCPTA – 20 weeks (300 hours) a) PPS – 6 X 3 hour-workshops (18 hours) b) CCCN – 13 weeks x 3 modules

CIEHP Program PURPOSE: - to increase awareness and build skills in Language, Culture and Communication for the Canadian Health Care Context. (with online preparation, F2F workshops, assessments and assignments) Focus: Skill-building in speaking and listening for health care context. (Reading is required for online component and some F2F activities; Writing assignments are related to ‘Reflective Practice’.)

CIEHP Program Overview Schedule: 200 hours over 12 weeks (Fall Session: Sept.- Dec. OR Winter Session: Feb.- May) (session depends on enrolment) Blended Delivery format: - Online component 8 hours/week (requires access to and ability to use computers for learning purposes) (prep for workshop and/or post-workshop assignments) - Face-to-face (F2F) workshops (Wed. and Fri. 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon) 8 hours/week Total: 16 hours/week(min.)

Complete/Incomplete based on: successful completion of all program requirements (online & F2F), including the ability to work in groups and independently demonstrated skills and knowledge of CIEHP units and achievement of outcomes attendance (min. 80% of F2F component) Final report is issued to successful participants: strengths and areas to improve in language and communication CLB level in Listening and Speaking Non-credit program

CIEHP Program - Expectations PREPARATION AND SELF-STUDY: Prepare for all F2F sessions by doing readings, viewing videos, completing independent work on-time Complete all post-workshop homework and assignments on-time Organize and manage all paper and electronic resources for retrieval as needed ATTENDANCE at F2F sessions: 80% minimum required Phone call or email to notify of absence Punctuality: be on-time for all F2F sessions (8:00 a.m. start time) PARTICIPATION: Actively contribute to all in-class discussions; participate in all activities

CIEHP Program - Curriculum Patient-Centred Practice Effective Interviewing Therapeutic Communication Communication with Challenging Patients The “Language” of Health Care ( medical terminology vs. ‘lay language’, slang, idioms) Collaborative Practice (teamwork & decision-making) Professional Communication (“Soft” skills) (assertiveness, giving/receiving feedback, conflict management)

Four Eligibility Requirements An applicant must: 1. be an Internationally Educated Health Professional (IEHP) (Applicants must complete “Proof of Education” form and include resume in application package.) 2. have initiated the process of registration with specific regulatory body for your health profession* or decided on an alternative career path within health care (Applicants must complete “Career Plan” in application package.) 3. be a permanent resident This program is funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). *See www.manitobafairnesscommissioner.ca/regulators-2

Eligibility Requirements cont’d. 4. Meet the language proficiency requirements: Must have taken an English language proficiency test within 6-12 months and achieved: CLB level 8 in both Speaking and Listening OR IELTS 7.0 in both Speaking and Listening The focus of program is on Speaking and Listening; however, a minimum of CLB 7 (or IELTS 6.5) in either Reading or Writing are required. Must be referred by Winnipeg English Language Assessment and referral Centre (WELARC); www.welarc.net Consideration will be given to applicants who have taken other language tests approved by specific health regulator (e.g., CELBAN for nurses) Applicants who have completed an approved ESL program within six months (outside of RRC’s programs) will also be considered with certain conditions.  Check with Stuart Schwarz, Program Manager: syschwartz@rrc.ca
